LIBRARY SERVICES Patron Driven Acquisition of Online Video ALIA Information Online 2013 Colleen Cleary (Library Resource Services Manager) Anne Loria (Resource Team Leader) CRICOS No J

LIBRARY SERVICES Objectives Outline the Kanopy PDA purchase model and trial methodology Make some initial comparisons of the trial against library experience with ebook PDA Contrast the effectiveness of online video PDA against the librarian driven selection process, focusing on library acceptance Discuss the workflows and whether they help/hinder the acquisition and access process

LIBRARY SERVICES Why PDA? eBook PDA proven cost- effective model Higher levels of ongoing use than librarian selected Evidence of use to justify annual commitment of funds Kanopy’s willingness to trial alternative models References: Price & McDonald, 2009, p.13 Schroeder, 2012, pp Way & Garrison, 2011, pp

LIBRARY SERVICES EBL PDA Comparison EBL PDA eBooks No upfront platform fee Very large number of titles Free browse, pay for STLs Auto-purchase = outright purchase Kanopy PDA Online streamed video Upfront platform fee 800+ titles 4 free views Auto-purchase = annual licence (discounted price, regardless of advertised platform fee)

LIBRARY SERVICES PDA Trial 800+ online videos matching QUT’s criteria available on the QUT video portal until July 2013 or until QUT’s budget is exhausted Following the 1 year licence videos can be renewed at standard licence rates or not renewed.

LIBRARY SERVICES Content PDA Content divided into a number of packages –Architecture –Literature –Ballet and Opera –Teacher Education –Psychology –Instructional Film Studies –Cinema Movies and Docos –Special package of miscellaneous videos for QUT Word clouds used to analyse words for subjects and titles

LIBRARY SERVICES Content - Subject Heading Word Cloud

LIBRARY SERVICES Content – Title Word Cloud

LIBRARY SERVICES

LIBRARY SERVICES Workflow for EBL PDA Large numbers of brief records loaded into catalogue Invoiced for Short Term Loans (STL) Full MaRC records on 1 st STL 4 th STL triggers invoice for outright purchase

LIBRARY SERVICES Workflow for Kanopy PDA Full MaRC records loaded to and updated in catalogue –Libraries Australia IDs –MARCOM Auto-purchase on 5 th view, triggers licence invoice

LIBRARY SERVICES Library Acceptance Survey of QUT Liaison Librarians was undertaken in late 2012/early 2013 Question on purchase models Results: –General support for the PDA model across all Faculties

LIBRARY SERVICES Library Acceptance Results: –Preference for PDA and/or outright purchase over subscription models –One instance of opposition to PDA for both ebooks and online video

LIBRARY SERVICES Library Acceptance Issues include: –Content needs to be relevant and good quality –Cost –Lack of relevant content in some subject areas e.g. business –Prefer all models not just one option –Prefer off-air recordings rather than commercial content –Might be used for entertainment

LIBRARY SERVICES Promotion Resource Discovery Library web advert Library News article Liaison Librarian role Kanopy marketing ideas: –Shelf wobblers –Student Guild advert –Flyers –Student competitions

LIBRARY SERVICES Usage

LIBRARY SERVICES Conclusion Attractive option given online video cost Promote student discovery and usage Influence library acceptance Academic support still critical

LIBRARY SERVICES Conclusion Early stages of trial If the PDA trial is successful and offered ongoing, other titles can be selected via this method.
