Collaborations With Faculty Mike Weaver

Instructional Technology Enhancing the Curriculum What is ITEC? Mike Weaver We work with faculty to help them use technology effectively in their teaching. In some cases, this also involves working with students on course-related projects. We also work with faculty on research and scholarship work with students on research projects

Examples of Collaborations Between ITEC and Faculty Mike Weaver

Masks …. Project: A website/database of cultural masks used in a Foundation Seminar. (FOUN Masks and Meaning ) Mike Weaver

Example Mike Weaver

ITEC’s Role Designed and implemented database and website. Mike Weaver

Some thoughts In a project of this nature, there is a lot of work upfront, but minimal work after the website is complete. Mike Weaver

Bees …. Project: Student-created videos to document some aspect of social insect behavior. (ANBE Social Insects) Mike Weaver

Example Mike Weaver

ITEC’sRole Worked with faculty to establish project goals Taught students to plan/storyboard, shoot and edit video Assist students with technical details as they work on the actual projects. Mike Weaver

Some thoughts The time commitment for students to design, shoot and edit video is significant. This has to be incorporated into the course planning. The time commitment from ITEC is ongoing as the instruction and assistance repeats each semester. Unlike other projects, as there is no ‘enduring’ web site or data. Mike Weaver

Project: a website to record results of dissections of various animals from a biology lab (Biology 312: Vertebrate Anatomy). Website will grow each year as additional animals are dissected. Snakes …. Mike Weaver

Example Mike Weaver

A student project – what are the objectives? Worked with faculty to come up with basic website design and layout. Designed a template web page to be used for each group of students and their dissections. Instructed students on how to edit their page (about 20 minutes of class time, repeated each year). ITEC’s Role Mike Weaver

Some thoughts For this assignment, the instructor was primarily interested in the results – the actual web page. Having students learn skills to create web pages was not important. Consequently, we tried to make it as easy as possible for the students to edit their web page. Mike Weaver

Lewisburg Architecture …. Mike Weaver

Example Mike Weaver

ITEC’s Role consulting on organization of website, sizing of images, video conversion, etc. (most work is being done by a student employed by the professor) Mike Weaver

Some thoughts In a project of this nature, it’s best to get involved earlier rather than later. Mike Weaver

Each project has unique needs. Proceed with that in mind! Some final thoughts Mike Weaver

Some projects are course-oriented (focused on learning) and some are research/scholarship oriented (typically focused on data/output). What implications does that have for how the project is implemented? Mike Weaver

For student projects, it is important to understand the faculty objectives upfront. Sometimes, having students learn some technology skills is important. In other cases, it is not. Implement accordingly. Mike Weaver

Some collaborations are once-and-done. Others, particularly when they involve student projects, require a commitment over time. Mike Weaver
