Presentation transcript:

 Barbara Lemke, RN, CCAP  Certified Clinical Aromatherapist

 A holistic approach to health and wellness  Aromatic Volatile Liquid of plants, flowers, leaves, blossoms, seeds, bark, roots, fruits and berries  Essential oils are steam distilled or expressed  Oils found in hairs, ducts, glands of plants

 Promotes health and prevents imbalances on the physical, emotional and spiritual level  Highly concentrated  More potent than herbs – One drop represents the potency of one ounce of plant material  Long history for using essential oils – Over 500 references in the bible

Aroma enters through olfactory system The limbic system: directly communicates with the “master glands.” The hypothalamus and pituitary glands regulate many body functions including hormones and the immune system. Chemistry of oils determines therapeutic value

Antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-parasitic Hormone regulator Stimulates the immune system Antispasmodic Anti-inflammatory Anti-emetic Anti-anxiety, antidepressant, relaxing Astringent Skin toner and moisturizer Wound healing Decreases sinus/respiratory congestion

 Plant material placed in chamber  Steam is forced into chamber, oil is released and carried off from the plant in the steam  Oil evaporates along with the steam and is moved through the condensing chamber, cold water added  The cooling effect returns the steam to water and liquid essential oil  Timing, temperature, harvesting are important factors

 Essential oil is in the rind  Oil is cold pressed or squeezed by a machine

 PATCH TEST before using essential oils if sensitive skin  Dilute 2-5 drops of the essential oil with 1 tsp of carrier oil. Apply to white part of a band aid and put on forearm for hours. Observe for any redness/irritation  Avoid oils in eyes, do not pour oils in ears  Some oils, such as tea tree and lavender, can be applied on skin directly if no allergy exists  Only essential oils labeled as food supplements are for internal use  Put contacts in eyes before handling oils

 Medical history is important  Certain oils should be avoided with certain conditions or diseases. Examples include pregnancy or seizure disorders.  Remember if you apply the oils to someone else you will also absorb the oil. Medical condition of the giver is important.  Citrus oils tend to be sensitive to light so avoid sun exposure for 4 hours or apply under covered area  Aromatherapy is not a substitute for medical care

Hypertension: hyssop, rosemary, sage, thyme Seizure Disorder: hyssop, sage, fennel, wormwood, rosemary, spike lavender Estrogen dependent cancers: clary sage, fennel Asthmatics should use a dilute mixture of essential oils at first to avoid certain reactions Certain oils should be diluted when used topically. Examples would include oregano, thyme, cinnamon, clove, birch If pregnant, consult an aromatherapy practitioner

 Inhalation  Massage  Direct application/neat application  Baths  Compresses  Gargles  Diffusing

 Add 2-4 drops of oil into a bowl of hot water, cover head with towel and inhale  Spray or use 2-3 drops of essential oil in the shower  Inhale from the bottle  Apply 1-2 drops on a tissue or swatch of material  Apply 1-2 drops in palm, cup hands, close eyes, and breathe deeply  Diffuser

 Improves circulation  Decreases stress and anxiety  Decreases pain and muscle tension  Use 1-5 drops of essential oil in 1 tsp of carrier oil for a hand or foot massage

 Apply essential oil diluted or undiluted to a specific area for relaxation, pain, or wound care*  Oils can be layered for added effect

 Baths: mix the essential oil with a small amount of milk or Epsom salts or sea salts to disperse the oil into the water. Use 5-10 drops of essential oil.  Compresses: use for comfort or relaxation; 1- 2 drops of essential oil with warm or cool wash cloth.  Gargles: used for mouth irritation/sores/sore throats. Add 2 drops of essential oil to a small amount of honey or milk in cup; add 3-4 ounces of warm water. Gargle, swish and spit.
