Goal was to build the bridge or holistic vision that is central to connecting competency development in healthcare to actual patient safety and the quality of patient care

Continued Competence Leadership Forum: From Pieces To Policy (CCI, 2007) Included 40 invited experts from all areas of nursing, including certification organizations, associations, regulatory bodies and academia. Goal was to create a shared vision for a meaningful, relevant and patient-driven continued competency system for nursing.

ABNS & CCI Research Summit An opportunity for CCI to continue its commitment to convene great thinking. The innovative design, content and guiding principles of this event reflect the ongoing evolution of the conversation CCI began in 2005.

OBSERVATIONS Coalition (Partnership) Model Works ▫Can accomplish more by working together than you can alone Committed to the Need for Solid Research Basis Committed to Providing Tools to Members Collegiality versus Competition

The purpose of the Summit is to obtain consensus on a unified research agenda in support of nursing certification. Nursing Certification and Competency Research Summit

ABNS Research Committee conducted a comprehensive review of the nursing certification literature The findings from this review indicate: a growing number of descriptive studies that include nurses’ certification status. however, there is a need for research that will establish empirical evidence linking nursing certification to improved systems of care and patient outcomes.

Research Themes After a thorough review of data sources, the ABNS Research Committee validated seven themes as representing current and future issues facing nursing certification. In January 2009 an electronic survey was sent to all ABNS member organizations, who represent nursing specialty certification organizations, affiliated testing agencies and credentialing and consumer advocate groups to validate the identified themes. Thirty-nine individuals responded to the survey and validated the themes proposed by the Research Committee.

Theme Validation March 5, 2009, ABNS and CCI hosted a planning meeting to validate the research themes. The meeting used scenario planning to elicit thoughts on the future of nursing. The factors impacting nursing were identified and scenarios created that focused on the delivery of safe, quality patient care. The group compared these scenario research themes with the themes validated from the themes survey. Through a series of facilitated exercises, the members of the planning group clarified and consolidated the themes into research priorities.

Research Priorities  Understand the relationship between nursing certification and patient outcomes.  Measure continuing competence in nursing.  Examine the relationship between the health care work environment and nursing certification/certified practice.  Determine stakeholder understanding of nursing certification and perceived value of nursing certification.
