CAMPUS WIKI ANURAG MISRA DURGESH DEEP

What’s a Wiki? A “wiki” is a type of website that allows users to easily add, remove or otherwise edit and change most available content In effect, a wiki is actually a very simple, easy-to-use user-maintained database for searching and creating information Wikis are generally designed with the philosophy of making it easy to correct mistakes

Work with Benefits Wikis help young people develop “writing skills and social skills by learning about group consensus and compromise—all the virtues you need to be a reasonable and productive member of society” -Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia

Work with Benefits The media is controlled by people who have the resources to control it,” he says. “Wikis show that all of us have an equal opportunity to contribute to knowledge” -Andy Garvin, head of the Digital Divide Network

WIKI TEMPLATE TASK: Describe Food Joints in IIT Kanpur

Approach to the Problem Brute Force Method Collect all the information on the required subject Structure the data into categories Workout the article in html or wiki syntax Share the article with your friends so that they can give valuable input and commit changes

Approach to the Problem Dynamic Method Write the complete article using available information using html or wiki syntax Update and change the article with inflow of more information Cross check the article against incoming citations Periodically share and discuss the article with friends for valuable input

Approach to the Problem The example we are going demonstrate took the ‘Dynamic Method’ as the basic article was put up initially and then contents added

Key Points Name of the food joints and their location Timing of opening/closing Menu offered Quality of food and overall experience (strongly dislike, dislike, neutral, like, strongly recommend) The reason of inclusion and its’ relative importance Miscellaneous Comments

Initial Article The initial wiki-article presented the previous week and it’s basic features are as follows

Basic features of the initial article Content Errors Linguistic Errors Logical Errors Incomplete Information Improperly structured Not in required html or wiki syntax

Content Error “Apart from restaurant, there is a bakery that sells cakes, biscuits, pizzas…..” VS “Apart from the restaurant, there is a bakery shop at the Shopping Center that sells cakes, biscuits, pizzas……”

Content Error “ You can find all types of parathas here, with prices ranging from half a cent to a few hundred bucks ” VS “ You can find parathas here with lots of different fillings, ranging from traditional Indian parathas like aloo paratha to Spanish, Italian and Mexican parathas, with prices ranging from fifty rupees to three hundred rupees ”

Linguistic Errors Missing a lot of full stops after passage completion Expressions like “ prices ranging from half a cent to a few hundred bucks” (previously discussed, unclear expression) “out of which 2 shops are currently run by Kathi ” (should avoid using numerals, better write two)

Logical Errors Expressions like: “CCD is a very good place for intellectuals and couples who want to spent some quality time” “The service in Campus Restaurant is not good, but if your are a little patient you can probably manage with it”

Incomplete Information No mention of timings of opening/closing No mention of the menu of the place No mention of the overall environment and experience of the place No images of the various food joints Lacking basic information about a few shops included

Improved version of the article Explicit mention of the time

Improved version of the article Explicit mention of the menu of the different food joints

Improved version of the article Give a pic of the food joint wherever possible

Improved version of the article Including more places like CSE Canteen, Hot n Cold, messes, etc;

Improved version of the article Adding extra pieces of information wherever possible

Improved version of the article Structured Content

THAT’S ALL FOLKS Special thanks to Akshat Bhatnagar for adding in valuable inputs, and editing my initial final submission. Enjoying the spirit of Wiki!
