RHKAAF History Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force (HKAAF) was formed in 1949 Main Duties: To defend Hong Kong and render support to Royal Air Force and British Forces in Hong Kong The HKAAF fleet: Supermarine Spitfire (Fighter) North American Harvard (Trainer) Auster (Light Observation and Trainer Aircraft) Westland Widgeon (Helicopter – introduced in 1958)

RHKAAF History HKAAF was granted the title of “Royal” by Queen Elizabeth II in In 1984, in anticipation of Hong Kong’s change of sovereignty in 1997, RHKAAF began its transformation from a military unit to a HK Government disciplined force specializing in the provision of flying service – the Government Flying Service (GFS).

RHKAAF History On 1 March 1993, the RHKAAF held a disbandment ceremony at its Kai Tak Headquarters. On 31 March 1993, the squadron standard of RHKAAF was laid up at the St. John's Cathedral, Central. On 1 April 1993, the GFS commenced operation immediately after the disbandment of its predecessor, RHKAAF.

GFS Headquarters In 1998, the GFS Headquarters was relocated from Kai Tak Airport to Chek Lap Kok. Address: 18 South Perimeter Road Hong Kong International Airport Lantau, Hong Kong GFS also operates a heliport in Hung Hing Road, Wanchai.

The GFS Structure Captain Michael C P Chan, Controller, Government Flying Service The GFS is headed by the Controller who reports directly to the Secretary for Security. He is supported by the following sections: Operations Section Training & Standards Section Engineering Section Quality Section Administration Section

Operations Section Service &Operation Search & Rescue (SAR) Police Support Fire Fighting General Government Support Aerial Survey Air Ambulance Road Rescue

Training & Standards Section The Training & Standards Section is responsible for setting professional standards and overseeing the training and development of all aircrews.

Engineering Section The Engineering Section which is an approved HKAR 145 maintenance organization, well supports the flying and operational activities. It provides virtually all the aircraft and equipment maintenance services from within its well-equipped and modern hangar and workshops.

Quality Section The Quality Section ensures that the unit's operations conform to civil aviation flying regulations and other quality and flight safety standards.

Administration Section The Administration Section provides administrative support services to the whole department. The services it provides include human resource management, financial management, supplies and general administration.

GFS Service Area Area of responsibility covers the majority of the South China Sea up to 700 nautical miles south of Hong Kong, Most of the search and rescue operations take place within 400 nautical miles of Hong Kong.
