Honoring God’s Holiness April 14

What do you think? What are some examples of “white lies” that people tell? Today we study how confession and repentance are still needed when we sin. – The Israelites needed to sacrifice an animal for sins. – Jesus became that sacrifice for the sins all men when He died on the cross

Listen for examples of what is sin. Leviticus 5:1 (NIV) 'If a person sins because he does not speak up when he hears a public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned about, he will be held responsible. … [4] 'Or if a person thoughtlessly takes an oath to do anything, whether good or evil--in any matter one might carelessly swear about--even though he is unaware of it, in any case when he learns of it he will be guilty

Recognize Guilt Before Holy God According to this passage, if you witness a wrong, a crime, why is it an obligation to speak up and testify? What kinds of things could happen if the witness does not speak up? What are some examples of when we promise to do something but don’t follow through?

Recognize Guilt Before Holy God What would be some examples of the opposite – you commit to do a wrong, but stop before doing it? Why is it more important to do the right thing than to keep a promise or an “oath”? What are some synonyms people use for sin that make it sound less offensive and not so bad?

Recognize Guilt Before Holy God Why do people in our culture shy away from calling sin what it really is … sin?  Reality is that our “transgression of the law” is sin (I John 3:4) … God is the one offended What are some of the greatest areas of temptation toward both sins of commission and omission for folks of our age group? Confession is agreeing with God that what we have done (or not done) is sin. It includes the intent to change one’s attitudes and actions. Confession is agreeing with God that what we have done (or not done) is sin. It includes the intent to change one’s attitudes and actions.

Listen for the proper response to the guilt of sin. Leviticus 5:5 (NIV) 'When anyone is guilty in any of these ways, he must confess in what way he has sinned … [14] The Lord said to Moses: [15] "When a person commits a violation and sins unintentionally in regard to any of the Lord's holy things, he is to bring to the Lord as a penalty a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver,

Listen for the proper response to the guilt of sin. according to the sanctuary shekel. It is a guilt offering. [16] He must make restitution for what he has failed to do in regard to the holy things, add a fifth of the value to that and give it all to the priest, who will make atonement for him with the ram as a guilt offering, and he will be forgiven.

Seek Restoration with Holy God According to this passage, what was required when a person sinned? Since Jesus died on the cross, we don’t pay for the sacrifice. But what are some ways in which we do suffer consequences of our sins? When children do something wrong, why is it better if they confess quickly?

Seek Restoration with Holy God If confession and restitution are helpful (both for children and for adults), why do we avoid them? Why was the 20% extra restitution so important? Why not just confess simply pay for what was damaged or stolen and move on?

Seek Restoration with Holy God What’s the difference between superficial confession and true repentance? Superficial Confession True Repentance

Listen for the types of offenses addressed. Leviticus 6:1-7 (NIV) The Lord said to Moses: [2] "If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord by deceiving his neighbor about something entrusted to him or left in his care or stolen, or if he cheats him, [3] or if he finds lost property and lies about it, or if he swears falsely, or if he commits any such sin that people may do-- [4] when he thus sins and becomes guilty,

Listen for the types of offenses addressed. he must return what he has stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to him, or the lost property he found, [5] or whatever it was he swore falsely about. He must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day he presents his guilt offering. [6] And as a penalty he must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord,

Listen for the types of offenses addressed. his guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. [7] In this way the priest will make atonement for him before the Lord, and he will be forgiven for any of these things he did that made him guilty."

Make Amends with Others Before Holy God What types of unfaithfulness to the Lord are listed here? What was the person who had been unfaithful supposed to do to make things right? To whom is it harder to say “I was wrong” … to God or to another person? Why? To GodTo Another Person

Make Amends with Others Before Holy God In Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV) Jesus said, "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, [24] leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.” What is the order of getting things right? Why do you think this order or sequence is important?

Application Words spoken, promises made are serious matters and need to be spoken with forethought. – You are responsible before the Lord for what you do, what you don’t do – This week consider carefully your promises and your actions

Application Sin results in the heavy weight of guilt that ought to lead us to confess our sins before the Lord. – True confession must include repentance and restitution – Thank the Lord today for His perfect sacrifice for your sin

Application Reality is that we offend God by mistreating others – When you are aware of sin in your life, you need to resolve the problem immediately – God forgives us only when we make things right with those we have offended – Be careful this week to keep things right between yourself and others … between yourself and God
