Plastic and Ocean Plastics A big environmental problem

Plastics in our life Plastic is a part of our daily life. Food is enclosed in plastics; computers and mobiles are made of plastics and so on. In many cases plastic is a very practical and usable material. But plastics are a non-biodegradable material that when thrown in nature will cause problems. Broken glass that comes into water sinks to the bottom and is by the time buried by sediments. Plastics usually float and by the time are broken down in small fragments. Small fishes think it is food. With too much plastic in stomachs they will die prematurely.

Not only fishes are fooled by the nice- looking plastic. Birds are victims too.

Plastics thrown everywhere When walking along a Philippine beach, when riding a Banka boat you always see plastics. What shall we do about it? All people who use plastics have a responsibility to help to recycle it in some way. Plastics must be reused, recycled or burned. But burning should be in a controlled way. Plastic is made of oil and it contains a lot of energy. In Sweden we burn it to heat our houses with it.

You can make electricity of plastics. All this plastics contain a lot of energy. Thrown away in the nature it causes a lot of problems. It must always be burned in special ovens Some plastics contain problematic substances You must always control the smoke.

Plastics to be recycled

Some beaches have more than other beaches but on all beaches you can see plastics

Who are going to clean our beaches from the plastic pollution? What can we as teachers do about it? Well I think we can do a lot about it. Show our pupils what the plastics are causing in the nature. Tell them that when we throw plastics in the ocean there will be less fish to eat.

Animals can be deformed by it as this turtle because plastic is strong

Seals try to eat it.

In the oceans the plastics are assembled because of the circular currents.

Plastic is broken down in small pieces and eaten by small fishes.

Throw plastics in the ocean and there will be less fish to eat.
