The 40 Martyrs

These 40 martyrs were soldiers in the army called a pagan emperor Licinius. Were forced to worship idols but they refused. As punishment they were imprisoned and beaten for 8 days. Were sentenced to death to be thrown in the lake freezing Sevastiei. On March 9 to mention the 40 Martyrs.

One soldier gave in and came out of the lake but died on the spot. Another soldier took his place after he died. Stayed the night in the lake happened unseen things: ice melted, the lake has warmed and 40 crowns which were shining down on soldiers. Morning were removed from the lake and were still alive. They were broken legs and were left to die. They were then burned and the ashes thrown into the lake.

On this day, after going to church it is customary to give alms martyrs( mucenici) and trained in different ways.

If it rains on this day it will be weather and Easter. If tuna in the days, summer will be warm and fruitful. If the tuna with one days before harvest will not be so good and will be a rainy summer.

Women's Day is on March 8, and on men is considered to be on March 9 when they celebrate and the 40 martyrs.

An important aspect of this celebration is tradition to drink 40 or 44 wine glasses. It is believed that this wine is spilled blood of the martyrs. But it seems to be a pagan tradition and considered an insult.

It is recommended to taste the red wine and the individual will have throughout the labor force
