Lesson 26 – pages 22-23

 To learn the primary hazards of volcanoes.  To learn the secondary hazards of volcanoes.  To learn benefits of volcanoes.  Key Skill = Communication

 Volcanic bombs are large rocks thrown out of the volcano  Pyroclastic flows occur when a superheated cloud of gas and ash runs down the volcanoes side.  Ash falls can bury whole areas or towns causing buildings to collapse.

 The small earthquakes during an eruption as well as the blast can trigger landslides.  The ash can mix with water to form deadly fast flowing rivers of mud called lahars.  After an eruption sometimes the entire volcano collapses, when this happened in Krakatoa it triggered a massive tsunami.

 Using a sketch to help you describe volcanic hazards: ◦ Primary hazards ◦ Secondary hazards.

 The lava has broken down to give a very rich and fertile soil.  The height of the volcano (4321metres) also causes a cooler climate.  This has created the perfect conditions for farming coffee.  In the past (before climate change) the cooler climate stopped mosquitoes from spreading malaria.  The volcanic landscape acts as a tourist attraction creating local jobs.

 Describe and explain the benefits of Mount Elgon in Uganda to local inhabitants.
