Lesson 26 – pages 22-23
To learn the primary hazards of volcanoes. To learn the secondary hazards of volcanoes. To learn benefits of volcanoes. Key Skill = Communication
Volcanic bombs are large rocks thrown out of the volcano Pyroclastic flows occur when a superheated cloud of gas and ash runs down the volcanoes side. Ash falls can bury whole areas or towns causing buildings to collapse.
The small earthquakes during an eruption as well as the blast can trigger landslides. The ash can mix with water to form deadly fast flowing rivers of mud called lahars. After an eruption sometimes the entire volcano collapses, when this happened in Krakatoa it triggered a massive tsunami.
Using a sketch to help you describe volcanic hazards: ◦ Primary hazards ◦ Secondary hazards.
The lava has broken down to give a very rich and fertile soil. The height of the volcano (4321metres) also causes a cooler climate. This has created the perfect conditions for farming coffee. In the past (before climate change) the cooler climate stopped mosquitoes from spreading malaria. The volcanic landscape acts as a tourist attraction creating local jobs.
Describe and explain the benefits of Mount Elgon in Uganda to local inhabitants.
