Presentation transcript:

Comm Arts Day 4 (computers are needed) (4 minutes) Do your bell ringer on the blue slip. Choose a word that has a positive connotation for you. Write it down and the connotation you have for it. Then look up the denotation at dictionary.com and write that down as well. Finally use your word in a sentence relating to Christmas on your slip of paper. Example: Hope: Believing in the unbelievable. OR Hope: (v.) to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence. I hope it snows a lot this Christmas.

Learning Goal and Essential Question Learning Goal: Recognize the difference between denotative and connotative. Essential Question: How does the characterization of the hero or villain impact how readers interpret them?

Discussion Starters (2 mins) For your graphic organizer why did you choose a hero or a villain? How easy was it to identify people who are examples of them? Why?

Group Time! (7 mins) You will be split up into groups of four based on whether you chose to write about heroes or villains for your homework. You will discuss three things: 1. What does a hero or villain look like to me? Come up with one answer. 2. How does our background or the character traits we have listed influence our reactions or feelings about these heroes or villains? Come up with one answer. 3. Who defines or is the greatest example of a hero or villain? Why? Write down what they do and/or say that makes them a hero or villain. Please also find a picture of them to share with the class. For this group activity you need a writer, researcher, questioner, and a monitor.

Share out (9 mins) While groups are sharing please think about this question: Do I agree or disagree with this group? Why?

Discussion Ender (1 min) How does characterization influence the way I interpret people?

Where are we going? (3 mins) Tomorrow you will be making a poster summative based on these FCAS. FCAs for the Wanted Posters: Four character traits (circled) that apply to ALL heroes/villains stated in DETAILS: (5 pts each) 20 pts Four explanations (underlined) that show how heroes/villains impact others or surroundings in EXPLANATIONS: (15 pts each) 60 pts Use and correctly punctuate __4__ compound sentences (highlight yellow): (5 pts each) 20pts Picture: is an expectation

Exit Ticket (4 mins) 3-2-1: Three things I need to do or remember for tomorrow’s summative. Two ways characterization influences how I interpret others and characters in a story. One thing I need help with or an FCA I am worried about.

Homework Find a picture or draw a picture for your poster tomorrow.

Before you go…(4 mins) Please complete the Cover Sheet for your summative persuasive paragraph so I may write your grade on it and return t to you by the end of this week. FCAS for the persuasive paragraph were: Paragraph is clearly organized : 61 Three properly cited facts are used: 9 Three sufficient and relevant facts: 30
