Apostrophes!

The Rules There are 2 main reasons to use an apostrophe: To show ownership To replace a missing letter

Ownership The hat that belonged to Aoife = Aoife’s hat The guitar that belongs to Mr. Fortune = Mr. Fortune’s guitar

Missing Letters Can not = Can’t I will = I’ll They have = They’ve We are = We’re

The case of IT Only use and apostrophe for it if you mean ‘it is’ It is a lovely day = It’s a lovely day I had no homework today because it is my birthday = I had no homework today because it’s my birthday Use its when you need to imply possession or ownership e.g. The cat drank its milk The army sent its soldiers to help the situation

Remember!! Apostrophes are NEVER used to indicate the plural! They show: ownership and missing letters!
