Presentation transcript:

IGCSE Literature qualification This year you will be completing an IGCSE in English Literature. The exam board is AQA and you need to do the following. – Complete a piece of coursework comparing 2 texts – Complete an examination which covers 1 text you have studied and some unseen poetry

The exam We will be looking at this later in the year in more detail but you will need to – Analyse an unseen poem – Answer a question on the text ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’

The coursework We are going to complete this before October Half Term. We will be comparing the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ with the play ‘Death of a Salesman’ There is no specified word limit but I feel the final essay will need to be between words The question you will be answering is: How do Steinbeck and Miller depict The American Dream in ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’?

Date and title Write the question and subtitle in your book: Coursework essay question How do Steinbeck and Miller depict The American Dream in ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’?

Let’s unpick the question in small groups (make notes): How do Steinbeck and Miller depict The American Dream in ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’? What have you learned about The American Dream from your homework? What does this word tell us we will need to cover? What does this word mean? Who are these? What might we focus on when analysing their language?

Feedback (make notes) The American Dream – Your homework is to research what this is. How – language, structure, themes, punctuation Depict – to show/portray/describe/represent by drawing, painting or through another art form (like words) Steinbeck and Miller - writers’ names = writers’ purpose (why they wrote the text, what was their purpose?)

OMAM (Of Mice and Men) What is it about? Who are the characters? Where is it set? When is it set? What happens? Write a brief paragraph in your book answering these questions with the subtitle: OMAM background and opening
