Introduction  Born on August 5, 1930 at his grandparents’ farm house near Wapakoneta, Ohio.  Marries Janet Shearon in January of 1956 in California.  Had three kids:  Eric(Ricky) Armstrong born in  Karen Armstrong born in  Mark Armstrong born in  Neil Armstrong is still living today in Lebanon, Ohio.

Social Contribution On July 20, 1969, Astronaut Neil Armstrong slowly climbed down the Eagle Lunar Module and became the first person to walk on the moon. He went with astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the lunar module. They were being watched by millions and millions of people on the television. Neil told the world…. “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind !” He went to the moon not just to become the first person on the moon,he also went to run a number of experiments and collected many moon rocks samples to take back home. Neil told Mission control that the moon’s surface was powdery and that it was very easy to move around on. Neil and Buzz planted a U.S. Flag and a plaque on the moon before they went back to Earth.

Childhood  First of three children of Stephen and Viola Armstrong.  Born on August 5, 1930 at his grandparents’ farm house near Wapakoneta, Ohio.  Armstrongs moved sixteen times within Ohio during Neil’s first fifteen years.  At six years old, Neil lived in Warren, Ohio.  One Sunday morning, Neil and his father went to a local airport to see a Ford Tri-Motor Plane. The pilot offered for a ride and Neil was fascinated by the flight. Ever since, Neil started to like planes, and riding in the sky.  Neil was a very smart child because in the first grade, Neil read a total of ninety books and it impressed his teacher that she decided to have him skip second grade.  He started to learn more about flying and planes, which made him spend time building model airplanes.  His family moved to Sandusky, Ohio when he was ten years old.  Got his first job mowing the lawn at a cemetery that helped him pay for his flying hobby.

Adolescence  Neil was fourteen years old and moved back to Wapakoneta, Ohio.  In 1944, Neil entered Blume High School as a sophomore.  During his three years at Blume High School, Neil held several jobs in order to earn money for his passion for fying.  When Neil was fifteen, he began to take flying lessons at the airport.  To pay for his lessons, he worked in a pharmacy.  Back then, it took Neil about twenty-three hours of work at the pharmacy to earn the nine dollars needed to pay for each lesson.  On his sixteenth birthday, Neil earned his student pilot’s license.  Jacob Zint (astronaut who bulit a home observatory on top of his garage) lived next to Neil in Wapakoneta.  He let kids see into the telescope. “Neil would look and look and look…when he looked through the telescope, that’s all he waned… he wanted business.”

Adulthood  Graduated from Blume High School in  Joins navy cadet scholarship program and enrolls at Purdue University in aeronautical engineering.  Neil moved to Pensacola, Florida for flight training as a naval air cadet in  Earned three flying medals for his works in  Neil’s duty with the navy ended in 1952, then he returned to Purdue University to finish his aeronautical engineering studies.  Met Janet Shearon in 1954 while working on his newspaper route.  In January 1955, Neil graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering.  Accepts a job at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Ohio and later at Edwards Air Force Base in California.  Marries Janet Shearon in  January 28, 1962, his daughter Karen dies of a Brain Tumar.  Joins NASA’s astronaut program.  In 1969, Neil serves as a commander of Apollo 11.  *July 20, 1969, becomes the first man to walk on the moon. *  Retires from NASA and moves to a dairy farm in Lebanon, Ohio.  , Neil works as a professor of aeronautical engineering in Cincinnati.  Neil and Janet Armstrong divorce in 1994.
