Why It Is Important To Have Standards-Based Curriculum and Linking Your Curriculum to the CTE Standards Gary Garcia EVOC 510

You Know That What You Teach Is Important You know that what you teach your students is of great value. You see the positive results of what you have taught every day. You see your students gain and improve upon valuable skills. You know that your students improve their job status or gain employment with the skills that are taught and learned in your classes.

Do Others Know Your Course is Designed to Teach the Proper Material? Your course outline might look great but who says that what is on the outline is important? In education’s current quest for accountability, do the appropriate agencies know that your curriculum is designed to teach what is important? Do your industry partners know that what is taught in your classes is important?

Standards-based Curriculum Are Based on research Are Rigorous & relevant Describe what to teach, not how to teach it Are a continuing commitment to excellence.

Standards-based Curriculum It is the documentation that shows that what is taught in a course is valuable and important. It will satisfy government agencies. It will satisfy industry partners. It gives credibility to your program’s accountability. California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

Career Technical Education Standards Are designed to support a seamless transition to postsecondary education and entry to a career. Support mastery of essential employability skills and rigorous academic content standards. Are concise statements that reflect the essential knowledge and skills students are expected to master and include foundation standards that apply to all industry sectors. Build on existing career technical education standards, appropriate standards established by business and industry, and academic content standards. California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

The Eleven CTE Foundation Standards Are: 6.0 Health and Safety 7.0 Responsibility and Flexibility 8.0 Ethics and Legal Responsibilities 9.0 Leadership and Teamwork 10.0 Technical Knowledge and Skills 11.0 Demonstration and Application California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

CTE Industry Sectors Fifteen Industry Sectors Interrelated occupations and broad industries

The Fifteen CTE Industry Sectors Are: Agriculture and Natural Resources Arts, Media, and Entertainment Building Trades and Construction Education, Child Development, and Family Services Finance and Business Health Science and Medical Technology California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

CTE Career Pathways Example Industry Sector- Building Trades and Construction Career Pathways Cabinetmaking and Wood Products Engineering and Heavy Construction Mechanical Construction Residential and Commercial Construction California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

Linking your curriculum to the standards- You Are The Expert You are the expert in your field of instruction. You know what your curriculum is. You are the best person on this staff to be able to link your curriculum to the appropriate standards. California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

Review the Foundation Standards Review the list of Foundation Standards Familiarize yourself with each of the Foundation Standards Know them well enough to be able to link them with your items in your curriculum.

Review the CTE Career Pathway Standards For Your Course(s) Review the list of CTE Career Pathway Standards Familiarize yourself with each of the Career Pathway CTE Standards Know them well enough to be able to link them with your items in your curriculum.

Lumpers and Splitters Lumpers- take several like items and put them together as one large unit Advantage- less items to manage Splitters- take an item and divide it into several smaller pieces. Advantage- can take special note of minute differences

Today, We Are Lumpers When aligning standards to our curriculum, we are going to lump like items together. It is easier and still accomplishes what we need to do- does the linking and show that your courses are teaching what needs to be taught. We don’t want to lump EVERYTHING together…..just like items. “Safety” covers safe use of power tools, use of appropriate safety equipment, how to handle flammable material, etc… These are all lumped under “safety.”

Not All Curricula Are Created Equal Some course curricula are written with “content skills” Some are written in outline format with main topics and individual tasks. Other formats are used also. Know your curriculum.

Linking Look at each major topic/outline item/etc. in your curriculum. Find the CTE Foundation Standards that corresponds to that item. Write the Foundation Standards numbers down for each item. Find CTE Career Pathway Standards that correspond to major items. Write the CTE Standard numbers down for each item.

Example For Medical Assisting Pathway Outline item: VI.Safety a. Knowledge of International Hospital Code System b. Triage Codes & Preparedness c. General Safety & Injury Illness Precautions d. Fire & Electrical Safety e. Patient Safety f. Incident Reports

Example For Medical Assisting Curriculum Continued Foundation Standards That Match Your Outline 6.0 Health and Safety Students understand health and safety policies, procedures, regulations, and practices, including the use of equipment and handling of hazardous materials: 6.1 Know the policies, procedures, and regulations regarding health and safety in the workplace, including employers’ and employees’ responsibilities. 6.2 Understand critical elements for health and safety practices related to storing, cleaning, and maintaining tools, equipment, and supplies. And many others California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

Example For Medical Assisting Curriculum Continued Remember, we are going to be “lumpers,” not “splitters.” Use the main standard and do not break it down farther. 6.0 Health and Safety Students understand health and safety policies, procedures, regulations, and practices, including the use of equipment and handling of hazardous materials.

Example For Medical Assisting Curriculum Continued CTE Career Pathway Standard that fits your outline item D2.0 Students understand the protocols and practices necessary to maintain a clean and healthy work environment: D2.1 Know how to evaluate potential causes and methods of transmitting infections and how to apply standard precautionary guidelines. D2.2 Use various manual and mechanical decontamination and sterilization techniques and procedures. D2.3 Carry out hazardous waste disposal policies and procedures, including documentation, to ensure that regulated waste is handled, packaged, stored, and disposed of in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. And many others California Department of Education- California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards Grades Seven Through Twelve

Example For Medical Assisting Curriculum Continued Remember, we are going to be “lumpers,” not “splitters.” Use the main standard and do not break it down farther. D2.0 Students understand the protocols and practices necessary to maintain a clean and healthy work environment:

Example For Medical Assisting Curriculum Continued There will undoubtedly be several Foundation Standards for each of your course outline items. Remember, they cover math, reading, writing and a variety of other things. There might only be one, two or a few CTE Pathway Standards for each of your course outline items. Foundation Standards are broad while Career Pathway Standards are narrow.

Example For Medical Assisting Curriculum Continued Outline item: VI.Safety a. Knowledge of International Hospital Code System b. Triage Codes & Preparedness c. General Safety & Injury Illness Precautions d. Fire & Electrical Safety e. Patient Safety f. Incident Reports Foundation 6.0, 2.0, 4.0, 5.0, 8.0, 11.0 CTE Pathway D2.0, C1.0, C3.0

You Can Do It Provided for you is: Copy of your curriculum Copy of Foundation Standards Copy of CTE Pathway Standards that pertain to your curriculum Example of what you need to do Link your major outline items with the Foundation Standards and with the CTE Career Pathway Standards.

Remember: You know your program is valuable so show others that it is too. Give documented credibility to your program. Give documented credibility to NKVTC.
