New Rubric!!! Quiz on Wave Characteristics on Monday/Tuesday

Key Words/Question Key Words (wave, medium, longitudinal, transverse, compression, rarefaction, crest, trough, amplitude, wavelength) What is a wave? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 A Wave is a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. A medium is the environment that the wave travels in/through. – ie: air, water, earth, rope, slinky The medium does not move as the wave passes through! Only the energy moves.

What is a wave? Webster's dictionary defines a wave as "a disturbance or variation that transfers energy progressively from point to point in a medium and that may take the form of an elastic deformation or of a variation of pressure, electric or magnetic intensity, electric potential, or temperature."

In other Words... A wave is a disturbance or variation that transfers energy through a medium. A medium is the environment that the wave travels through (air, water, earth, rope, slinky, etc…). The medium a wave travels through may experience some local oscillations (vibrations) as the wave passes, but the particles in the medium do not travel with the wave. A wave can be in any number of shapes.

Key Words/Questions Define: Compression, Rarefaction. What are the two types of waves? What is the difference between a Transverse and a Longitudinal Wave? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 There are two types of waves: – Longitudinal (Compression): Waves that displace the medium back and forth as y travels parallel to the medium. The medium does not have any net (total) movement Sound Waves

Longitudinal Waves

Key Words/Questions Define: Crest, trough, equilibrium What direction does a wave travel to the medium? What is an example of a transverse wave? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 Transverse: Waves that displace the medium up and down as energy travels perpendicular to the medium. The medium does not experience any net (total) motion. Light Waves

A B

Types of Waves  A Combination of Longitudinal and Traverse Waves  Ocean Waves

Key Words/Questions What is wavelength? What is the symbol for wavelength? What is the wavelength in a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 Wavelength (λ): The distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave.

Wavelength The distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave.

Key Words/Questions What is amplitude? What is the symbol for amplitude? What is the wavelength in a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 Amplitude: the measure of the maximum distance that a wave can travel from it’s rest point. A measurement of how much energy a wave is carrying. Amplitude: Amp

Amplitude: the measure of the maximum distance that a wave can travel from it’s rest point. Measures how much energy a wave is carrying.

Key Words/Questions What is frequency? What is the measureme nt of frequency? What is the symbol for frequency? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 Frequency (f): the number of waves that pass in a given period of time. A measurement. Measured in Hertz (Hz) Hertz = # cycles/ per second

A C B

Frequency 1 Hz = 1 cycle per second A)1 cycle/second = 1 Hz B)2 cycle/second = 2 Hz C)4 cycle/second = 4 Hz D)8 cycle/2 second= ?

Key Words/Questions What is period? What is the symbol for period? How is time measured? Characteristics of Waves Notes 11/15 Period (T): the amount of time it takes to do something. T = 1 second

Watch the following movie clip... Could you hear the explosion if you were in space? Why or why not?
