How to Save $$$ on Printer Ink Jere Minich - Program Director Lake-Sumter Computer Society, Leesburg, Fl ===== APCUG – Board of Advisors Region 5 – Florida 1

Overview. How to printers really work. ? What can I do to save money on Ink. ? What is the most Cost effective operation for my printer.? What are some trusted sites for Ink.? What is the recommended printer for home use.? Where to go for more info.? 2

Printer Terms to Understand Ink cartridges - Depending on manufacturer & model: – ink cartridges come in various combinations such as: separate black and color cartridges, color and black in a single cartridge a cartridge for each ink color. – CMYK = Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Key color Black 3

Printer Terms to Understand Print head - The core of an inkjet printer: – contains a series of nozzles that are used to spray drops of ink. – Print Heads hold ink from the Cartridges, until needed. – The Print Head is separate from the ink storage vessel. – Print Head is : On the cartridge In the printer 4

Print Head Design Two Types = Fixed Head & Disposable Head The fixed-head: – provides a print head that is designed to last for the life of the printer. – Print Head is in the printer, not on the cartridge – fixed-head are manufactured primarily by: – Epson – Canon – Hewlett-Packard 5

6 Fixed Head – 4-6 Cartridges Bottom View

Disposable Head a print head which is supplied as a part of a replaceable ink cartridge. – May refill the cartridge – Every time a cartridge is exhausted, the entire cartridge and print head are replaced with a new one. – damaged or clogged print head is only a minor problem. 7

Inkjet Technology for the Print Head Drop-on-Demand (DOD) is divided into two types: 1. Thermal DOD – (Canon, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark) Print Head contains a Metal Plate that heats up 2. Piezoelectric DOD – (Epson, Brother Industries) Print Head Contains a crystal that vibrates The nozzles used in inkjet printers are ‘human hair’ fine. (REALLY SMALL) 9

How Print Head works Thermal - Drop On Demand The ink acts as a coolant : – to protect the metal-plate heating elements − when the ink supply is depleted, and printing is attempted: – the heating elements often burn out – permanently damaging the print head. When the ink first begins to run low: – the cartridge should be refilled or replaced, – to avoid overheating damage to the print head. 10

Thermal - DOD “Bubble Jet” Printers 1. Called bubble jet. a. tiny metal resistors create heat, b. heat vaporizes ink to create a bubble. c. bubble expands, d. ink is pushed out of a nozzle onto the paper. e. bubble "pops" (collapses), 1.) a vacuum is created. 2.) pulls more ink into the print head.

DOD Piezo Piezoelectric Print Head 1. Patented by ‘Epson’ 2. technology uses piezo crystals. 3. located at the back of the ink reservoir of each nozzle. 4. crystal receives a tiny electric charge that causes it to vibrate. a. vibrates inward, it forces a tiny amount of ink out of the nozzle. b. vibrates out, it pulls ink into the reservoir to replace the ink sprayed out.

Sponges Some cartridges contain sponges, – so some ink remains behind in the sponge. – Sponge prevents ‘Sloshing of Ink’ The printer reports that the cartridge is empty: – when there is still 10-35% of the ink left. The printer only estimates the amount of ink left. – Print Chip does the estimating. – Some Cartridges will stop working on a specific date. Change the year on your computer Many Cartridges contain 7 ML of Ink. 22

The ink consumed in the Cleaning Process needs to be: Collected to prevent ink from leaking inside the printer. The collection area is called the spittoon, This can be an open plastic tray underneath the cleaning/wiping station. In Epson printers, there is typically a large absorption pad in a pan underneath the paper feed platen. Dried ink in the spittoon can form a pile that can stack up and touch the printheads, jamming the printer. 25

The Spittoon The ink consumed in the cleaning process needs to be dumped into the spittoon. – In HP printers this is an open plastic tray underneath the cleaning/wiping station. – In Epson printers, there is typically a large absorption pad in a pan underneath the paper feed platen. 26

How to Save $$$ on Printing Use Print Preview before you print. – See what your printout will look like. Print in draft mode. Grayscale printing. Printer settings – are essential and will save you the most when done right. – make “low quality” the default. 29

Which Font Saves Ink and Money.?? The winner: Century Gothic: – which delivered a 31 percent savings in printing costs over Arial. On a dollar basis: – the University Study projected that printing around 25 pages a week would save $20 a year by using Century Gothic for all documents. This Power Point Presentation is in Century Gothic 30

How to save $$$$ two ways: – 1. purchase compatible cartridges – 2. refill them up to ten times. Fill the cartridge at the first sign that it's going dry. 31

Printer – Saving $$ Must Do ……. Leave your printer on. When you turn your printer off, or ON (depending on manufacture) – it will clean print heads – It dumps the ink from the Print Heads to a absorbent material in the bottom of the printer. 32

Leave the printer ON. There no moving parts running in your printer. – Except when it is printing. Anything you print, including your nozzle check will use 1/50th of the amount of ink that is dumped in the bottom of your printer if you let the printer do the auto cleaning cycle. The auto cleaning cycle dumps both the black and all colors, and it dumps a LOT of ink. 33

Why Is So Much Ink Wasted? Whenever you power up your printer, it goes through a maintenance cycle that uses ink. That's what's happening when the printer head moves back and forth after your turn it on. This intermittent use can burn through more than half the ink in the cartridge. A few of the models “Consumer Reports” tested were so wasteful that only 20 percent to 30 percent of the ink in the cartridge ended up on the paper. 34

Consumer Reports Magazine says: There's no way to directly control the frequency of your printer's maintenance cycle. – That's determined by each manufacturer. But based on Consumer Reports testing, we know that turning the printer on triggers a maintenance cycle. – Obviously, the fewer cycles the better. That's why the magazine now suggests leaving the printer on. It did that with some of the most ink-hogging models and got noticeably reduced consumption. Yes, that will use more electricity, but inkjets go into a sleep mode and use very little power when they're not in use. 35

On-Off - Your Printer 1. Power down your printer properly, don't just unplug it.  You want the print head to move into a position that protects ink from drying out.  turn printer off from a power strip/ unplugging it leaves the heads exposed. 2. Power down your printer IAW the procedures of the printer. (IAW= In accordance with) 36

Save $$$ on Ink Find a Internet Source You can purchase ‘OEM’ or refurbish printer ink cartridges for: – a fraction of the manufacturer brand cost – still experience the same quality of print outs. Google your Printer : – refill cartridges; refurbished cartridges; cheap ink. – Example: Epson WF500 refill cartridges Epson WF500 refurbished cartridges Epson WF500 cheap ink 37

Where to get Ink Cartridges ? The key is to: – try to find the best replacement inks for your printer model, – not necessarily the cheapest, and for this you may have to try different suppliers, – on the internet – In your local area. Know the “What if” policy of your supplier. 38

2 types of Replacement Cartridges 1. a low capacity or starter cartridge. – These are often only ten to fifty percent full. 2. High Capacity Cartridge an example: – the HP 350 (low or standard capacity) 4.5 ml = $21.95 = $4.87 /ml – the Hp 350XL (high capacity). 25ml = $32.95 = $1.31 / ml So the XL cartridge can be a economical cartridg e 39

What Make of Printers can I refill? This changes constantly Canon, Dell, HP, & Lexmark cartridges are: – not difficult to refill, – some Lexmark cartridges employ a built-in counter chip that can't be reset. Epson cartridges also have a built-in counter chip, – however it is possible to purchase a chip re- setter. Brother cartridges generally lack any chip and consist of merely a sack of ink. – they can be readily refilled. 40

How do the printer companies prevent third- party cartridges from being used? a chip on their own cartridges which the printer reads. When the cartridge is empty (or when the printer thinks it is) – Printer sends a signal to the chip to self- destruct. – The chip can not be reset. So you are paying extra for a chip which prevents you from shopping for the best deal. 41

Warranty Rules. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, it would be illegal for them to void your warranty. Among other things, the acts states: “Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty. “ In other words, they can not insist that you use only their cartridges. 42

Refill Cartridges. refilling makes good sense. But there are a few things to be aware of: – Make sure the refill kit is for your printer model. – If the wrong type of ink is used, it can degrade the output or possibly damage the printer. – Virtually all desktop inkjets for home or office use have water-based ink. 43

Refill Cartridges While you can refill cartridges, – be very careful of the ones that have the print head built into the cartridge. – You do not want to refill these more than two or three times, the print head will begin to deteriorate could damage your printer. – Go to this web site: info about Refill 44

Single-color individual cartridges Printer brands have started using single-color individual cartridges. – only a single ink color. one separate ink cartridge for black, cyan, magenta, yellow. – Advantage -when only one ink runs out: you can replace the cartridge only for that ink instead of replacing all the colors. 45

Multi-color cartridges Cartridges that contain all the ink colors the printer uses. Disadvantage is: – that you will rarely need to refill all of the colors at the same time, – you have to be very careful when refilling only one color. – make sure you only refill one chamber of the cartridge. 46

Reservoir cartridges Cartridges that only contain an ink reservoir. – does not have a sponge inside. – You see a chamber completely filled with liquid ink. – Print Head is in the printer easiest to refill Reservoir cartridges can be repeatedly refilled. 47

Ink Cartridge Facts. Practically all cartridges - including the name brands - are made in China. In March 2007, the printer companies won the legal right to manufacture printers which refuse to recognize third-party ink cartridges. When the printer thinks the ink cartridge is empty, it sends a signal to the chip to self- destruct. 48

Trusted Suppliers I use. (Good Prices and Trustworthy, both take PayPal) – – Has: , Phone #, Mailing Address. – ‘What If’ Policy = Excellent – Average Price = $5 per cartridge – Only Covers: Epson, HP, Brother, Canon – – Has: , Fax #, Mailing Address – Good prices – ‘What If’ Policy = Excellent 49

Bottom Line. 1.Find out more about your printer. A. Google the make and model for detailed information. 2.Find a supplier for your cartridges. A.Local Store Front. B.Internet Supplier. 3.Find out the suppliers “What if” policy. 4.Buy small amount on first purchase. 54

The most expensive liquid on earth? 55

56

PC World Magazine Conducted significant research into the question of third-party ink cartridges.significant research bottom line is: – In the case of text and other black-and-white prints, we detected virtually no quality differences. – If you need the very best quality from glossy photo prints, investing in OEM ink may be worthwhile. Most people, particularly those who print text, can get by with third-party ink, which can offer a cost savings of up to 70 percent. 57

Printer Suggestions… if you don’t need color: monochrome laser from Brother. most inexpensive toners. $100 range. – Ex: HL-2080DW – Newegg $100 – free shipping. – It scans in color, – prints duplex, – wireless – uses Tn450 toners at $20 for 2500 pages. if you need the color and multi function: the best printers today are the Epson workforce 3600 series (3620, and 3640). They print: – From iPhone/iPad – Fast and Duplex – Don’t gobble ink, – use a double-size black 58
