Lesson 4

Quote of the day...  “It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated.”  Alec Bourne

Discussion  Write down any questions you have regarding the submission of Phase 1 for Monday  How did you feel about the information given in yesterday’s lesson?  What types of issues did you run into last night as you began research on YouTube?  Recording your own footage

Review of Yesterday’s Handout Analyzing Sport Skills Step 1: Determine the primary objective of the skill Step 2: Study expert examples of the skill being performed Step 3: Divide the skill into phases Step 4: Divide each phase into key elements Components of Sport Skills: (DESCRIPTION) -Purpose of the skill -Joints: Ankle knee hip shoulder elbow hands head -Base of support Center of mass Momentum (weight transfer) -OTHER

Summative Assignment Overview  Phase 1: Research & Description of the skill  Due Monday  Formative Feedback  Phase 2: Drawing Free Body Diagrams & Applying Biomechanical Concepts  Done In-Class – Due Date:  Formative Feedback  Phase 3: Biomechanical Analysis Report Paper  Submitted Due Date:  Summative EVALUATION – see Rubric  Principles of Biomechanical Analysis – Stability, Maximum force, Maximum Velocity p. 231

Example 2: Rugby: The Scrum- Half Pass The scrum-half is the player on the field who most often moves the ball from the ground into another offensive player’s hands Purpose: Move the ball from the ground into offensive teammate’s hands Success Criteria: Speed & Accuracy

Complete The Descriptive Analysis Backswing Critical Instant Follow Through

Backswing Purpose of the skill - move the ball from the ground to the offensive player’s hands Joints: - Ankle – ankles are flexed, the back (weight bearing foot) is in dorsi-flexion, the non-weight bearing foot is flexed at 90 degrees and pointed towards the passing target - knee – both knees are bent, the weight bearing leg is flexed to a greater angle - hip – the abdomen is flexed, the athlete is leaning forward, hips facing forward (squared up toward the scrum) - shoulder – shoulders are in line with the hips (squared towards the scrum, not the target), - elbow - elbows are slightly bent, as the ball is being held just anterior to the body, arms are both pulled back towards the leg supporting most of the body weight - hands – fingers are spread and comfortably wrapped around the sides of the rugby ball, wrists are flexed - head – head is turned to the side, looking at the passing target  Base of support – the base of support is very wide (approx. A meter) and it is lateral  Other - ?

Follow Through

Brainstorm Activity  How would you organize or layout the information required for Phase 1 so that it is meaningful to you? Think, Pair, Share:  Use Black Board Space  Share ideas with the class

Homework  Complete Phase 1 for Monday so you can get formative FEEDBACK  Have a wicked good weekend!
