Minerals: Lesson 4

Minerals: Minerals are made up of various compounds. Minerals are what make up rocks. “There are about 3000 minerals on Earth” (GMB, 2008, p. 1)

Minerals:Characteristics Color Luster Gravity Crystals Hardness

Minerals: Some examples of color would be: gold- pyrite, white-quartz, green-jade, blue- kyanite, red-ruby, yellow-sulfur. Luster examples: waxy-opal, pearly-talc, glassy-quartz, metallic-pyrite. Gravity: quartz-average weight, pyrite- heavy, gold-extremely heavy

Minerals: Characteristics Crystals: cubic-six equal faces, rose- shaped design (GMB, 2008). Hardness: Mohs Scale (soft 1-hard 10) Examples: Talc 1(fingernail), Calcite 3(copper penny), Fluorite (nail), feldspar 6(scratch with glass), quartz 7(nail), diamond(10)

Group Work: Read minerals article in groups and then share with other groups
