OUR MOON Phases & Tides Textbook pages 570-576

How Does the Moon Move? moon The moon revolves around the ______ while the Earth revolves around the ______! Earth sun Earth It takes about ______ for the moon to complete one revolution around Earth! 28 days sun

Phases of the Moon CAUSED BY: (1) Moon’s Orbit (2) Reflected Sunlight PHASES of the moon are: The different SHAPES we see each night when we look at the moon! CAUSED BY: The moon’s orbit (slightly tilted) (2) Reflected sunlight

Get ready to “moon” yourself!!! will be Earth! (4) SUNLIGHT (3) SUNLIGHT (1) (2) SUNLIGHT Use the moon at your table as a model of the real moon & the lamp in the center of the room as the sun. CAUSED BY: (1) Moon’s Orbit (2) Reflected Sunlight Stand with one arm stretched out toward the “sun”, with the moon straight in front of you, but raised up slightly. Record what you see on the moon chart in your notes. Turning counter-clockwise, stop at each of the following positions…90o, 180o, 270o… and DRAW what you see.

Phases of the Moon You will always see the 4 main moon phases in this order: 3rd Quarter (last quarter) New Moon 1st Quarter Full Moon (2nd Quarter) NO moon! D O C 7 days later… 7 days later… 7 days later… First Quarter & Third Quarter moons are what we SEE as “HALF MOONS”! We call them quarter moons because the moon is ONE QUARTER (1/4) or THREE QUARTERS (3/4) of the way through its 28-day cycle!

More Phases of the Moon! Record what you see in The amount of the moon we see does not just instantly change from one phase to another after 7 days. Instead, it changes gradually (just a little bit each night). Let’s “moon” ourselves one more time… (7) (6) (8) (5) This time, also stop HALFWAY between each of the positions you stopped at before. (1) (4) (2) (3) Record what you see in the chart in your notes.

Using the words below, let’s see if we can name each of the NEW phases you just drew… Waxing Crescent Full Moon 2nd Qtr Waning Gibbous New Moon Waxing Gibbous 3rd Qtr Last Qtr Waning Crescent 1st Qtr WAXING - lighted part of moon GROWING each night WANING - lighted part of moon shrinking each night CRESCENT - smaller than a half-circle GIBBOUS - Larger than a half-circle (egg -shaped)

Important MOON FACTS: The moon does NOT make its own light. It reflects light from the sun. The moon is the ONLY place we have ever sent a HUMAN to….because it is the closest object to us in our solar system! The gravity of our moon is strong enough to tug the water of our planet outward causing water levels to rise & fall each day!

Tides -the rise and fall of water every 12.5 hours Water on Earth rises for about 6 hours (HIGH TIDE), & falls for about 6 hours (LOW TIDE) in a continuous cycle This happens twice each day! 2 high tides & 2 low tides each day. The GRAVITY of the moon (and sun) PULLS on Earth’s water, creating high tides. Low Tide North Pole High Tide High Tide Moon Low Tide

ECLIPSES LUNAR ECLIPSE -Earth is between sun & moon -when an object in space comes between the sun and another object LUNAR ECLIPSE -Earth is between sun & moon (SHADOW ON MOON) SOLAR ECLIPSE -Moon is between Earth & sun (SHADOW ON EARTH) MOON EARTH SUN SUN MOON EARTH
