Room and Furniture Distribution Room Distribution- What´s important? Sunlight Air Circulation Logic of the Rooms Road Noise Open Floor Plan Paula Vicent, Rachel McGeachie, Sophia Ryan

Sunlight Bedrooms, living rooms and kitchen areas should be closer to sunlight. You have to think about where the sun is during the day and where you need sunlight This way you can save electricity (lights, heating, air conditioning)

Air Circulation This has to do with open floor plans and how your ventilation system should be placed. Bathroom must have ventilation Air should be able to circulate even if doors are closed. Doors should not be right next to a window because air will just come in and go right out.

Logic of the Rooms When distributing rooms in a house you should think about which rooms should be beside each other and which rooms should not. Example: Kitchen should be next to the dining room but not next to a bedroom. Bathrooms should be close to bedrooms.

Road Noise Bedrooms should be put away from the road so that you don´t get as much noise.

Open Floor Plan When distributing a house you should think about not having too many walls when you walk in the door. You should be able to see rooms when you first walk in and not just walls, this also helps sound to travel more easily. This is a closed floor plan. As you can see, you walk in and see a wall. This is an open floor plan, from the entry you can see most of the rooms in the house.

Necessity and Size of Rooms The basic rooms in a house are kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. Dining room is not necessary because you can put a table in the kitchen or living room. The living room should be bigger than the other rooms. Normally master bedrooms are bigger than other ones because two people generally share it. The size of other rooms varies depending on the scale of the house. Example: Bedrooms should be on the smaller size and bathrooms should be small but not so small you feel cramped in.

Distribution of Furniture The first thing you should take into account is the size, the proportion of the space, placement and distance between pieces of furniture. Furniture should not be blocking any entrances or plugs. You should be able to have a clear path to get to each piece of furniture. It is also important that the distribution allows entry of natural light and a comfortable flow. Choose a central point in the room and focus the rest of the furniture around it. It could be a couch a tv, a fireplace or a window.

A Different Way to Look at Furniture and Room Distribution: Feng-Shui Feng-Shui is an ancient Japanese belief that you can balance a space’s energy by how you distribute the space. It says that if the space has bad Feng-Shui it gives off bad luck and if it has good Feng-Shui it gives off good luck. The main guideline for Feng-Shui are: Clean out your clutter, Have good air and light quality, Define the Bagua (Which rooms are connected to your life) Feng-Shui is all about energy and relaxation within your home.
