Color has strong effects on people ’ s emotions. The Steiner philosophy proposes different colors affect children in certain stages of their life in different ways. Young babies should not be exposed to bright, intense colors so that their inner vibrations are not shocked. Soft greens and blues should be used in shared learning areas for children at the age of 10 + as it does not interfere with mental concentration. According to Steiner ’ s theory, color can induce or suppress : Motivation, stomach and head - aches, steady heart rhythm, depression, muscular tension, blood pressure and much more. ( http :// www. resene. com / homeown / use_colr / colours forliving. htm ) If we applied these theories to a larger scale, the city seems to be the perfect canvas to make for happier and healthier citizens. Yet urban settings tend to be primarily colorless. URBAN COLOR Weekly journal : 1 Sept. 8,2013

Why have colorful cities? It seems to me that color is not seen as “ professional ” in our money - making, time - saving obsessed world. Color is regarded as a non - necessity in urban environments. But in other parts of the world color is an integral aspect of a space, adding beauty and filling people ’ s lives with a little more happiness. This journal entry will explore the functionality and personality of urban color. Some cities use color to ward off insects ( Jodhpur, India ). Or with the Favela painting project in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, color creates pride and beauty in a place that many people believe to be undesirable. Beirut, Lebanon Jodhpur, India

The favela Painting projects were started by Artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn. They collaborate with locals to build pride in their communities. They intend to draw attention to, create beauty and combat prejudice in these forgotten spaces. With colorful public art, these favelas are turned into artworks that cannot be ignored Graffiti is usually stigmatized as a criminal activity. While this cannot be said for all graffiti, most is beautiful public artwork that brings character and color to cities. Like the favela painting project, the colorful graffiti on the Berlin wall transforms a symbol of division and prejudice to one that inspires creativity and unity. This is a great example of color providing functionality and personality to urban environments. http :// www. favelapainting. com / firmeza - foundation
