Legally what happens next? Under the present law, the school leaving age is 16. However from September 2013 the education leaving age increased to 17 and from 2015 it will rise again, to 18.

What are the route options?

What do I need to progress? GCSE English and Maths at C or above or equivalent It is compulsory for these to be part of any ongoing training if not achieved.

Next Qualifications?

How do I choose? Post-16 Options are wide and varied. Choose very wisely and carefully and think about the following questions: Which A-levels/BTECs/NVQs will motivate and inspire you? In which A-levels/BTECs/NVQs will I succeed best? Where do these A-levels/BTECs/NVQs lead? Is the combination appropriate (What would a university admissions tutor/employer think of English Literature, English Language, Media Studies, and Theatre Studies?) What are employers looking for?

A levels AS and A levels offered by schools and colleges for year olds. They’re highly valued by universities and employers and focus on academic subjects, although some are work- related. AS levels can be taken as a stand-alone qualification, or as the first part of an A level course. AS levels are completed at the end of Year 12. A2 exams and coursework are added on to an AS level at the end of Year 13, bringing it up to A level standard.

What to take? Some University courses will only accept specific subjects – research before you choose. Certain A levels give you more flexibility in course choice – do your background research. A levels are a big step up from GCSE. It’s important to study subjects you find interesting and motivated to learn.

Concerns about Apprenticeships Difficulty finding employer and application dates. Employer/training provider usually asks for A – C grades at GCSEs. May need to travel.

Vocational Courses Practical work related courses. Lead to Diploma, NVQ or BTEC qualifications. Wide range available including Agricultural, Engineering, Construction, Hospitality, Administration, Public Services, Catering and Hair and Beauty.

What course and level? This depends on your qualifications and needs: –Have you got English and Maths at GCSE? –Have you already completed a Vocational Course through school? –You may access a more general course before choosing specific qualifications

Concerns and FAQs Will there be a job at the end of the course ? Can the qualifications be used to access new routes? Is the qualification I’m choosing the one that employers want? Will there be a chance of work during the course?
