FEMA Map Modernization FIRM = Flood Insurance Rate Maps FIS = Flood Insurance Study Accurate information about flood risk is the first step in preventing and reducing losses. Today’s flood maps are outdated and limit their usefulness.

FEMA Map Modernization Nationwide Project $1 Billion Budget Started in 2004 Convert Paper Maps to Digital Maps

Better identifies your flood risk Improves accessibility/reliability of flood maps Better maps Based on current ground elevations (1980’s versus 2000’s) Utilize locally maintained street maps Digital maps – Geographic Information System – Websites More timely updates of flood maps
