Tool Box Talks for a Step Change in Safety

A Tool Box Talk is a meeting to identify potential hazards associated with a Job. The meeting is to consider aspects of executing the work with regard to HSE and in general. The Tool Box Talk is carried before work starts and repeated prior to any significant change. The person(s) most appropriate to will lead the Tool Box Talk to Explain the technical, procedural and documentation requirements of the work. Maximise the contribution from the work party regarding HSE. May need preparation and visual aids. Such a talk would require a record to be made of the content and participants. May take the form of a brief discussion initiated by a member of the work party at any time during the planning or execution of the work. It is not necessary to record such a Tool Box Talk. The essential feature of the talk is open honest effective constructive communication regarding potential hazards amongst those involved with the job. Definition of a Tool Box Talk

INTRODUCTION Tool Box Talks are a key element in the safe execution of work tasks and activities. They allow two important functions to take place: 1 - They allow the person undertaking the Tool Box Talk to consider all aspects of the task, the work site and the work party prior to any work being undertaken. 2 - Through a structured meaningful Tool Box Talk they further allow the work party to fully understand the task to be undertaken with its attendant hazards, risks and controls as well as offering a conduit via questioning sessions for feedback. TBT should not be undertaken lightly nor should they be impromptu. Whether formal or informal a degree of planning will always be required prior to the giving of a TBT.
