OVERVIEW FOR COACHING STAFF Playing and Practice Seasons

Countable Athletically Related Activity C ountable A thletically R elated A ctivity: A required activity with an athletics purpose involving student- athletes (SAs) and at the direction of, or supervised by, any member(s) of an institution’s coaching staff. CARA must count towards weekly and daily hour limitations  Championship and Non-Championship Season: 20 hrs/wk, 4 hrs/day with one day off per week  Off-Season: 8 hrs/wk, 4 hrs/day, two days off per week

Voluntary Athletically Related Activity  V oluntary A thletically R elated A ctivity: In order for athletically related activity to be considered voluntary and therefore not count towards weekly and daily maximums they must meet the following conditions:  Attendance cannot be reported back to the coach  No coach may be present  Activity must be initiated solely by the SA  SA’s attendance and participation (or lack thereof) may not be recorded for purposes of reporting such information to coaching staff members  No penalty for not attending

Conclusion of Championship Season - Team Team Sports: No practice or competition permitted following the last regular season contest unless under consideration for post season championships  If not selected for post season participation or eliminated from championship, practice and competition are no longer permissible.

Conclusion of Championship Season – Team Regular season competition permitted following conference championship, provided:  Team has not exceeded it maximum number of contests/dates of competition for the playing season in the sport;  The competition(s) appear as a regular-season competition(s) in its declaration of playing season for the sport; and  The competition(s) occur prior to championships selections.

Conclusion of the Playing Season – Individual Only squad members considered necessary for effective practice by individual(s) preparing for NCAA championship may continue to practice. If individual not selected for postseason participation or eliminated from championship, may no longer practice or compete.

Weekly Hr. Limitations Off Season - Football Outside the playing season during the academic year:  Only weight training, conditioning and review of game film are permissible  Eight hours per week  No more than two hours of game film

Weekly Hr Limitations Off Season – Other Sports Following the last regular season game/date of competition:  No out of season activities permissible until the conclusion of the Division II or national collegiate championship  Eight hours per week  No more than two hours per week of skill instruction  No team activities permitted  No activity permissible one week prior to the beginning of the institutional final exam period

Non-Championship Segment: 24 w/in days are considered “in season” Other 21 days are considered “out of season” Rule: No more than 20 hours per week and no more than eight hours of “out of season” activities.
