The Danube enters the city from the north; later it encircles two islands, Óbuda Island and Margaret Island. The third island Csepel Island is the largest of the Budapest Danube islandsThe river that separates the two parts of the city is only 230 m (755 ft) wide at its narrowest point in Budapest. Pest lies on the flat terrain of the Great Plain while Buda is rather hilly.

Economy Nearly all branches of industry can be found in Budapest. Main products are communication engineering and computer appliances, electric machines, incandescent lamps (General Electric). Pharmaceutical industry is also important, well- known Egis, Richter Gedeon and Chinoin companies are Hungarian, Teva also has a division here. The Malév Hunagrian Airlines is based in Budapest.

Spas One of the reasons the Romans first colonized the area immediately to the west of the River Danube and established their regional capital at Aquincumis so that they could utilize and enjoy the thermal springs. There are still ruins visible today of the enormous baths that were built during that period. The new baths that were constructed during the Turkish period (1541–1686) served both bathing and medicinal purposes, and some of these are still in use to this day. Budapest has 4 spas nowadays
