 Any activity that subjects the student to an unreasonable risk of harm or that adversely affects the mental or physical health or safety of a student  Physical brutality ◦ Whipping, beating, striking, branding, electric shocking, harmful substances on the body  Sleep deprivation  Consumption of food, liquid, alcohol, drugs, or substances in a harmful nature to a student  Ostracism

 Committing, encouraging, being a victim of, or failing to report hazing can result in fines or jail time. IT’S THE LAW  Firsthand knowledge that a hazing incident is planned or has occurred MUST be reported in writing to the Office of Student Life UC  If you have to ask if it’s hazing, it is.

 1 in 4 college students attribute alcohol use to be the cause of missing classes, doing poorly in courses, and getting low test scores.  High Risk Drinking ◦ Underage drinking/Drinking and driving/ Binge drinking (5 drinks for guys, 4 drinks for girls) ◦ Know the strength, know the amount, know the time  ODK’s drinking policy

 Serving alcohol to minors is a Class A misdemeanor ◦ Up to a $4000 fine ◦ Up to a year in jail ◦ Six months license suspension  As of September 1, 2011 ◦ A person under 21 will not be charged by police for possessing or consuming alcohol if the person calls 911 due to alcohol poisoning ◦ Limited immunity applies to the first person to call for medical assistance, only if the caller remains on the scene until medical assistance arrives and cooperates with the EMS and police.

 It is illegal to use, manufacture, possess, sell, or distribute substance as defined by chapters 481, 484, and 485 of the Texas Health and Safety Code  Do not give prescription or over the counter drugs to friends ◦ You never know how they might react to it  Do not take drugs and consume alcohol ◦ Be cautious of drug labels ◦ “Do not consume alcoholic beverages while taking this medication”

 Remember that at all times YOU are a representative to not only ODK but also as a student of UTSA.  When at school events or while wearing UTSA or ODK gear, remember to act civilized.  When ODK goes out as a group. How would you want others to view you?  Anything you do can help or harm UTSA and ODK’s reputation

 Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual act(s) forced upon a person by another.  Stalking  Harassment ◦ When a person commits an act with the intent to harass, annoy, alarm, abuse, torment, or embarrass another  What to do? ◦ Develop a paper trail ◦ Report to police (with evidence) ◦ Seek counseling ◦ Restraining order

 UTSA Police department can escort you to your car if you feel unsafe (such as late at night)  UTSAPD  In case of an emergency call UTSAPD Emergency line

 Food allergies are common  The best way to be prepared as an organization is to be in the know  If you have a food allergy that you think could pose a problem at any time the organization is meeting LET US KNOW. We will do the best we can to accommodate you.  If you have a food allergy and something happens involving it, we can get you help faster.

 ODK does not have a collective carpool for our events.  General traveling tips: ◦ When going long distances try renting a newer car  More reliable than personal vehicles ◦ Take a 30 minute break for every 4 hours of driving ◦ Try not to drive between 11pm – 6am ◦ Be aware of weather conditions  If too much alcohol has been consumed at an event and member is transporting themselves and/or others, ODK officers/members can and will step in  We want everyone to get home safely

 If ODK is ever having an event and a fire breaks out we WILL evacuate the area/building ◦ Even if it is only a fire alarm and we do not see direct signs of a fire ◦ Better safe than sorry  Space heaters have contributed to 73% of fire-related college campus deaths. ◦ Be careful in dorms  This is why sign-in sheets are important! ◦ We can get headcounts if an emergency should ever happen and confirm that all our members are safe.
