Bees research KFC Style

Why are bees so interesting? Bees carry around a special source of sticky thin liquid called nectar. It takes approximately 22,700 bees to fill a whole jar of honey.

Why we chose this ? We thought of this idea because there is a number of good reasons why. The reasons are: Bees make honey so we could sell it and create money for the school. They also pollinate our flowers. Bees are interesting so the children could learn about how they develop and live.

Safety First No pupils in our school are allergic to a bee sting we have checked this out at the office. We would ensure safety equipment is at hand. We also have two professionally trained first aiders (Mrs Brown and Mrs Boyle).

Extra facts Did you know that they will only sting if you disturb or attack them. A bee dies if it stings. Bees may annoy you but they are an endangered species.

The bees project We are planning to start with a couple of bee hives and then we will work our way from there. The bees will also keep away the foxes. We are also putting up signs so kids don’t go past the secured point or they might get stung.

Processing the project First we need a queen bee and that takes a specialist to do it. We need a queen bee because she brings the whole colony with her. Then we will be starting our journey on making the bee village project.

Information about where we are going to put the hives We are going to put the hives near a nearby water source (the pond) we will place it near where there is good drainage. We are going to prevail the wind (so it faces south, east). We have secured so it is near green nature products. We have also made it so the bees can get into there hives carefully and easily. We have put the hives so they are completely protected from the sunlight. We have secured the place so the bees can forage freely and drink water.

Fascinating facts about bees Without the honey bees. More than a third of the fruits and vegetables that humans consume would be lost. The survival of plants depends on pollination, and the honey bee accounts for 80 % of all pollination done by insects.

How Much Honey Can One Beehive Produce? One hive can produce 60lb (27kg) or more in a good season, however an average hive would be around 25lb (11kg) surplus. Bees fly about 55,000 miles to make just one pound of honey, that’s 1½ times around the world!

Where will we sell it? At the front of the school so the parent or guardian can buy the honey. Harvesting liquid gold - profit - maths!!!! make money for the school. If you choose our project you will be investing your money with a healthy annual return.

The prices of the project Cost of the bee hive kit=£345 Two sets of bees =£480 Second hive cost=£190 Altogether=£1015 Profit from the honey One hive produces 27kg of honey (27,000g) So our two hives will produce 54,000g of honey per season. Asda sell honey at 69.7p/100g. Therefore each hive will produce £ income We will need 79 empty jars per hive to store the honey, priced at £0.52 each (£41.08 per hive). Total profit = (£ x 2) – (£41.08 x 2) = £294.22
