Human DIGNITY and the Right to it. Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Maksimas Kozlineris, 2013

DIGNITY What is dignity ? How do you understand it ? I suggest to think for a moment and to say from 1 to 3-5 words that describe the word “dignity”, the right to be dignified, to live with dignity. That will help you to discover your values, which are connected with dignity and to compare them with the main documents that define dignity

„Dignified“ -„the one who has inner respect, feels his value“.* *„Vocabulary of Lithuanian language“ (2000, p. 463)

Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania – The main law in Lithuania, adopted in the Referendum of 25 October 1992 Not any other law can contradict the Constitution. Constitutio (lot.) – any very important law.

Article The dignity of the human being shall be protected by law. It shall be prohibited to torture, injure a human being, degrade his dignity.... Article 22. The law and the court shall protect everyone from encroachment upon his honour and dignity. Article Freedom to express convictions, to receive and impart information.....limited....by law, if this is necessary to protect the health, honour and dignity....

Constitution – as the main law of Lithuania, which defines freedoms and rights of the citizens, must be mentioned while talking about one of the Natural laws - dignity. It is important to know how much Constitution talks about dignity. But there exist many international documents:

Universal Declaration of Human Rights ( ) European Convention on Human Rights (Roma, / )* Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union ( / )*. *Antroji data (po pasvirojo brūkšnio) – dokumento įsigaliojimo data.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights -International document, 1948 December 10, Paris, -UN General Assembly. Eleonora Ruzvelt with printed Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Article 1 All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Article 5 No one should be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Article 12 No one should be subjected to.. attacks upon his honour and reputation.

Article 22 Everyone… …has the right to social security and is entitled to the realization....of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensible for his dignity and the free development of personality. Article Everyone who works has the right to the just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity…

European Convention on Human Rights - is international agreement, devoted to protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Europe. ( / )

Countries guarantee rights and freedoms for every human being: Article 3 No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Article Everyone has the right to freedom of expressions. 2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities may be subject to restrictions for the protection of the reputation or rights of others…

Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union For the first time in the history of EU all civil, political, economical and social rights of the citizens of EU and all people living in the territory of EU are described. ( / )

Today it is one of the most important and relevant international documents Prepared and for the first time introduced 2000 December 7 in Nice (France). Was not obligatory for countries. Since 2009 December 1 Lisbon Treaty entered into force and the Charter became obligatory document for all countries of the EU.

The Union is founded on the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity;.. The peoples of Europe,..., are resolved to share a peaceful future based on common values...the Charter reaffirms the rights as they result from the constitutional traditions and international obligations common to the Member States…

The Union therefore recognizes the rights, freedoms and principles… DIGNITY article 1 Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected. article 4 No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment Article 5. No one shall be held in slavery or servitude No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour Trafficking in human beings is prohibited Article 25. The rights of the elderly The Union recognizes and respects the rights of the elderly to lead a life of dignity… Article 31. Fair and just working conditions 1. Every worker has the right to working conditions which respect his or her health, safety and dignity

DIGNITY Equal Rights Love Understandi ng Respect Tolerance Compassion Recognition Courage Sympathy

It is important to understand: Right to Dignity arises not from conventions, treaties or declarations, it is a natural (given from birth), but law, countries respect and protect it. This is what we, human beings, should to – to value and defend this right by respecting ourselves and others. Human Dignity depends on two things: what we think of ourselves and how others treat us.

The Law recognizes the right to dignity, state acknowledges that everyone has this right and protects it from violations. It is not important what kind of person is it, what is his race, colour of his skin, social status, etc.

Human being can give away anything, but his dignity Human wish to live in dignity might be burdened in dishonourable, unwarrantable ways. Wish to drink water – is a wish for better life. Alas! If you vote for me – you vote for water. I will give you dignified life, vote for me.

What is the price for dignity? Sometimes people can “sell” their dignity for promises. Sometimes only for 10 dollars. Would you sell??? I wish it would never happen to you. Respect yourself and the dignity of others!
