Goal Setting A R T SPECIFIC S MEASURABLE ATTAINABLE RELEVANT TIME-BOUND S M A “Creating Smart Goals” from http://topachievement.com/smart.html R T

Smart Goals for the Semester in this Class Specific to learn the methods of goal-setting Measurable to earn at least a B in this class Attainable I have ample hours available to study as I only am in class 15 hours a week I have good study habits from high school Relevant This is important for me to reach my long-term goal Time-Bound I must achieve my goal by the last day of class

First year Sophomore Senior Junior 14 weeks to go in this semester See Graduation Senior Junior 14 weeks to go in this semester Sophomore See “Suggested Activity/Discussion Topics for Goal Setting” to help students think of goals short-term, intermediate term, and long - term goals. First year

LONG TERM GOAL The University of Massachusetts Class of 2015 Just for laughs! The University of Massachusetts Class of 2015

ACTION “Some people want something to happen. some people wish something would happen, some people make it happen.” Michael Jordan. 1994

I will attend every class session I will see my instructor during office hours whenever I do not understand ……………… This is a good point to have students generate their own list of action plans. There are many that expect a B in the class but have not thought about the steps they need to take to make it happen. This can be done as a sharing experience with a neighbor followed by a general discussion Have one student come up to the front of the room and list as many New items as exist. You might then share some of your own.

C - Jane Marsh “ Life is what happens while we’re busy making other plans” John Lennon Talk to students about disappointments they are likely to face as they try to meet their goals. As Lennon’s quote suggests, there are times that we do not achieve what we set out to. Sometimes, life just gets in the way. This is a time for reflection and self-assessment. A time to go back to basis and ask ourselves if we followed our action plans. The next two slides continue this theme.

“The minute you get away from fundamentals – whether its proper technique, work ethic or mental preparation – the bottom can fall out of your game, Your schoolwork, your job, whatever you’re doing." Michael Jordan, 1998

ReAssess your Actions: Did I attend every class session? Did I see my instructor during office hours if I did not understand Did I visit the tutoring center for help Did I turn in all homework assignments when due Was I on time for every class Did I……………

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. ..”

A Good Work …And that is why I succeed." Jane Marsh "If you do the work you get rewarded. There are no shortcuts in life.“ Michael Jordan, 1994

"Never say never, because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.“ Michael Jordan, 1998 On completing the powerpoint, assign the “Personal Development Plan”. Explain that the plan has short-term, intermediate, and long term implications. Have them keep the original and suggest that they revisit the plan at least once every semester. Assign them to turn in a copy of the plan to you.
