Lizards Pascal will be your guide. In this slide show you will experience of some types of lizard. Also what they eat, how and they stay fit and healthy . Lizards are reptiles that live in every continent in the world, excluding Antarctica. Lizards have four legs and external ears, which distinguishes them from snakes.

What lizards eat Some lizards eat insects, bugs and spiders. Others are vegetarian and will only eat plant material, fruit or vegetables (apples are a favorite for some lizards). Some species of lizards eat other lizards! If you are getting a lizard as a pet make sure you ask what type of food your particular lizard eats. Every species of lizard eats different things!

Cool facts! Lizards are a type of reptile. They can detach their tails if they are caught by predators. The upper and lower eyelids of chameleons are joined, leaving just a small hole for them to see through. They can move their eyes independently however, allowing them to look in two different directions at the same time. Chameleons have long tongues which they rapidly extend from their mouth, too fast for human eyes to see properly. Chameleons generally eat insects. Some chameleons have the ability to change color. This helps them communicate with each other and can also be used for camouflage. Geckos have no eyelids. Geckos have unique toes which allow them to be good climbers. Iguanas have a row of spines which run down their back and tail. Green iguanas are popular pets. The Komodo dragon is the largest type of lizard, growing up to 3 metes

What will eat a lizard? There are many kinds, or species, of lizards, and most of them have a lot of predators, or natural enemies. Many kinds of birds eat small lizards. Larger birds of prey such as hawks, owls and eagles hunt , kill and eat lizards. Snakes also eat them, as do many species of mammals such as weasels. Life is not easy for most kinds of lizards.

INFO Size: The largest lizard is the Komodo monitor. It can grow longer than a person. The smallest lizard is a tiny gecko. Characteristics: Most lizards have dry, scaly skin. They have four legs, clawed feet, and a long tail. You can see their outside ear opening. Lizards have a weak tail. A small bump or tug will break it off. This will puzzle the enemy. The lizard can get away. Not all lizards have weak tails. Lizard tails help in balance and movement. Fat is stored in the tail. Losing the tail can be a big problem. Some lizards can grow a new tail. Food: Some lizards eat bugs and spiders. Others eat plants, small animals, or even other lizards. Most lizards use their eyes to look for food. Some use their sense of smell. Lizards have jaws with teeth. They also have teeth on the roof of their mouth. hide. Few lizards are dangerous. But, be careful of lizards. Many lizards bite or have sharp spines. Other Threats: Human are a probem for lizards. Some people eat lizards or lizard eggs. In the past, people killed lizards and sold their skin. The lizard's habitat is sometimes destroyed by people building towns or farms. Few lizards are dangerous. But, be careful of lizards. Many lizards bite or have sharp spines.

INFO Habitat: Lizards live in deserts, forests, prairies, marshes, and rocky areas. Most lizards live on the ground or in trees. Lizards are fun and easy to watch. They are most active on warm, summer days. On very hot days, some lizards hide. Most lizards sleep through the winter. On warm days, they sometimes come out to eat. Locomotion: Most lizards can run, climb, and cling. A few can swim. People often see lizards dart over logs and rocks. They run quickly across the ground. However, some lizards have small, weak legs. These lizards move slowly. Most lizards put their eggs in a nest. Other lizards have live babies. The mother li Enemies: The lizard has many enemies. Some lizards are eaten by birds. They are also eaten by animals, snakes, and other lizards. Defenses: Some lizards break off their tails to escape enemies. Other lizards may swell up, hiss, or move their tail or body to scare an enemy. Some lizards can change colors to hide.

Random Facts! Most lizards have movable eyelids and can blink (a few can’t blink, like the geckos). Lizards smell with their tongue—like snakes. Lizards shed their skin. If caught by the tail, to escape, most lizards can break their tail off at a weak vertebra link and later grow another. The new grown tail is smaller and has no bones. The largest lizard is the Komodo dragon—it can reach 10 feet in length. Komodo dragons are patient hunters: they bite their prey and wait sometimes for days for the prey’s slow death. Some lizards, in order to protect themselves, can squirt blood 2-4 feet out of their eyes. Some lizards can live over 30 years—the record, 33 years and 11 months, is held by a Mexican beaded lizard.
