About Ben Serebin Working in the IT sector since 1996 Specialty is Exchange Server, Spam Filtering, DNS, & Wireless. Recently Completed Project Q4 09: Investigated deploying Exchange 2010, considering Amazon’s cloud virtualization (EC2) for 2 Linux web-servers. Current Projects Q1 10: Reviewing geographic diverse Exchange backup solution using AppAssure 4.x release, researching using jumbo frames for iSCSI traffic, and deploying Exchange 2010 (considering using a HTC TouchPro2). Current Environment: Running Exchange 2007 Server on Windows 2008, Blackberry Enterprise Server 4.x, running on VMware ESXi 3.5. Current handheld device is a BlackBerry Bold. My PPTs are focused on conveying a tremendous amount of technical information in a short amount of time. If I had a presentation assistance, they would be prettier as well. So, any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Why Upgrade to Exchange Server 2010? The same hardware configuration as Exchange 2003 or 2007, your overall end-user Outlook performance will be vastly better. Microsoft recommended item counts limits increased by 500% over 2007 and 2000% over Limit is now 100,000 items per folder. Database improvements (sequential versus random) has led Microsoft to suggest SATA drives for mailbox storage if used in conjunction with 3+ DAGs (replaced CCR & SCR). Database I/O performance increased 70% over 2007 and almost 200% over OWA Premium mode is now supported on 3 browsers and 3 operating systems adds feature such as conversation view, multi-calendar comparison, OCS presence, and more.

Why Upgrade to Exchange Server 2010? (cont.) Unified Messaging w/transcription, end user managed call handling rules, Online Archive (requires Outlook 2010 or OWA), retention, discovery (multi-box searching via web) Outlook’s nickname cache (nk2) is now server-side and shared with Windows Mobile 6.5 devices. Hub Transport role can be configured to protects against lost messages in case of system failure. Feature is called Shadow Redundancy.

Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2010 Requirements1 Architecture: Intel x64 only (no more support for Intel Itanium family IA6) Comment: x64 only was known. IA6 is not a loss. OS for Exchange Application: Windows Server 2008 x64 & Windows Server 2008 R2 Comment: No issues here. x64 is better supported on 2008 and later than OS for Management Tools: Vista x64, Windows 7 x64, and Windows Server 2008 x64 Comment: Surprising it requires x64 and 2008 R2 is not on ths list. You might want to run this in a VM or dedicated PC if you deploy Management Tools separately. Normally, I manage a server directly via RDP.

Microsoft’s Exchange Server 2010 Requirements Cont. Memory: 4GB + 5MB per mailbox Comment: Recommend 8GB-32GB (above 32GB on 2007 has shown to have negative performance) Hard Drive Space: 1.2GB for install, 200MB on system drive (e.g. c:\), 500MB for each language for UM role Comment: Recommend c:\ for system (50GB) and 2.2x maximum database size. 32GB required for 2008 R2. Software Prerequisites: Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 & Windows PowerShell v2.0 Comment: 2010 will provide links for down during install.

Give Exchange Server What It Wants… Lots of RAM and a fast disk subsystem (IOPS [a disk speed performance measurement] for SATA vs SAS/SCSI up to 300% difference and RAID configuration (RAID 1, 5, 6, 10) is important as well) and can change the equation by up to 100% difference. So, 400% performance swing depending on what you select. Configure wisely! Exchange 2003 to 2007, saved about 70% in I/O to 2010 saved another 70%. Exchange 2003 is a 32 bit application, so 4GB is the limit. Exchange 2007 is a 64 bit application, so case studies show 32GB is the limit GB is a good sweet spot. Exchange 2010 is a 64 bit application, and limit is not known yet. When looking to deploy Exchange, read VMware’s Exchange Best Practices Guide. Microsoft Hyper-V also has a guide about this.
