The Spotted Leopard Gecko Characteristics/Features of the gecko

Pictures of his home What do you notice about these pictures?

How do they tie together? How do the characteristics of the gecko relate to the characteristics of where the gecko lives?

Why do they tie together? Why do you think it is important that the features of the gecko relate to the features of the desert, where he lives?

Activity Working with your table set, look through the pictures in the envelope and find the animal. Outline the animal in a Sharpie.

Animals If an animal can fade into its background, what is that called? Why do you think that’s important? Look at the pictures below.

Survival In order for animals to survive, like the gecko, they have certain features. The gecko has webbed, sticky feet in order to climb Eyelids in order to keep the sand out of their eyes. The skin is very durable, which provides protection from the rough sand and rocky terrain of the desert. They can detach their tails if ever attacked.

Variation In order for animals to adapt to their environment, they need to be born with certain features. Over generations, the DNA within different species changes in order for the animals to survive in their environment. This clip will tell you more about different animals and how they adapt their environment This clip will tell you more about different animals and how they adapt their environment

Adaptation If this word has to do with everything we have talked about, what definition can we come up with? Click on this frog to watch a short video clip about how animals adapt!

Wrap Up Do you still have any wonderings? In order to be done with science for today, you must complete the activity (at the end of the slide show), as well as, the following quiz..

The following is a warm up quiz! Click here to take a quiz about different animals and their adaptations Click here to take a quiz about different animals and their adaptations

Question 1 Which one of these is NOT a characteristic the Leopard Spotted Gecko uses in order to help him survive: A. sticky feet to climb trees A. B. Coloring that allows him to camouflage B. C. A tail that breaks off if feeling attacked C. D. Long nails that allow him to dig into a predator D.
