Formation of Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary rocks are formed by weathering and erosion of other rock. Over time that rock is deposited in new locations. Those sediments are compacted and cemented together.

3 types of sedimentary rock 1.Clastic rock 2.Chemical rock 3.Organic rock

Clastic rock Rock that is formed from fragments of other rock Examples: Sand and Gravel – Conglomerate Sand – Sandstone Silt and Clay – Shale

Chemical rock Dissolved minerals precipitate out of water solutions and harden. Examples: Water evaporating – rock salt, gypsum, and limestone Minerals fall out of solution into the bottom of the ocean – limestone

Organic rock Sedimentary rock that consists plant and animal remains. Examples: Limestone, coal, coral, and shell fragments that have been glued together.

Stratification The layering of different sedimentary rock types over time. Minerals are usually deposited in low spots. Over time the surrounding rock is weathered away leaving the sedimentary rock behind.

Fossils The remains, impressions, or other evidence of plant and animal life. Examples: The bones of an animal, leaf imprint, animal tracks, and even fossilized fecal matter.

Ripple marks and Mud cracks Ripple marks patterns caused by the action of wind, water, and ocean currents Mud cracks When fossilized matter is left behind when mud dries and hardens into shale. (a puddle)

Nodules, Concretions, and Geodes Nodules – lumps of fine grained silicate matter. Concretions – round solid masses of calcium carbonate. Geodes – hollowed out spheres containing crystallized limestone on the inside.
