Homework: O Textbook, page 92, Q. 2 (i) & (ii), and Q. 3 (i) & (ii). O Name the category of rock that limestone belongs to, and name a location where limestone is found. O Name two rocks, describe one use for each.

Sedimentary Rock sediments O Rock that formed from sediments (remains) of dead plants and animals, and other rock. O Deposited O Deposited (dropped) on sea and lake beds, as well as on land. O Layers O Layers built up over time. compressed O These layers were compressed (squeezed) and cemented creating solid rock.

Sedimentary Rock: Sandstone O Sand was worn away from the crust. O Carried by wind and water. O Deposited on beds of seas and lakes, and on land. O Layers built-up and were compressed together to form sandstone. O (Show rock and sand samples).

Sedimentary Rock: Sandstone O Colour: Red, purple, brown, grey, and white. O Texture: Course grained – it is a rough rock! O Uses: Construction industry. Used to make patios and floor tiles. O Location: Galtee Mountains (Cork), and MacGillicuddy’s Reeks (Kerry).

Sedimentary Rock: Limestone O Remains of dead plants and animals (including fossils & shells) deposited on the bottom of warm, shallow sea. O Layers built up over millions of years. O Weight compressed these sediments into layers of solid rock. permeable soluble O Easily worn away by water! Flowing water can erode through it (permeable). It is also easily dissolved (soluble) – see example.

Sedimentary Rock: Limestone O Colour: Grey. O Texture: Very soft. Easily worn away by water. O Uses: Construction industry (lime used to make cement). Agriculture (ground lime is very good for the soil – increases fertility). O Location: The Burren, Co. Clare.

Sedimentary Rock: Coal O Is coal an example of a sedimentary rock? O Why isn’t this rock used in the construction industry? O It’s a valuable fossil fuel!
