One type of rock, such as igneous rock, can be transformed into another type of rock, such as sedimentary rock. Is this true or false? Rock Cycle
Three Major Types of Rocks Igneous Rock Sedimentary Rock Metamorphic Rock
Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic Rocks What do you notice? What patterns do you see? What characteristics do you notice about these rocks?
Crayon Rock Cycle Which one is this sample most similar to? It doesn’t have grains, layers, or streaks. Now we will be using crayons to model the Rock Cycle and create the 3 types of rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic).
Sedimentary Rocks get worn down due to erosion. Erosion happens mainly as a result of weathering which is the effect of water, temperature and wind of the landscape. Eventually most of the broken bits of rocks end up in the streams & rivers that flow down from the mountains. The little bits are called sediments. Over time the layers of sand and mud at the bottom of lakes and oceans are compacted together and turn into sedimentary rocks.
Metamorphic Metamorphic rocks were originally igneous or sedimentary rocks, but due to movement of the Earth’s crust, were changed. If you squeeze your hands together very hard, you will feel heat and pressure. When the Earth’s crust moves it causes rocks to get squeezed so hard that the heat causes the rock to change. Marble is an example of a sedimentary rock that has been changed into a metamorphic rock.
Igneous (means made from heat) When volcanoes erupt and the liquid rock comes up to the Earth’s surface, then new igneous rock is made. When the melting rock is liquid inside the earth, it is called magma. When magma gets hard inside the crust, it turns to granite. Igneous rocks form when molten lava (magma) cools and turns into solid rock.
Rock Cycle Do you think igneous rocks could be turned into sedimentary rocks? How? Could it be turned directly into metamorphic rock? Could metamorphic rock be turned directly into sedimentary rock? How? Look at the additional arrows across the middle of the Rock Cycle that illustrate that any type of rock can turn into any other type of rock. For example, metamorphic rock can be eroded into sediment then compacted into sedimentary rocks.
