Department of Health Professions Prescription Monitoring Program Mission: To promote the appropriate use of controlled substances for legitimate medical purposes while deterring the misuse, abuse, and diversion of controlled substances.

Department of Health Professions WHAT IT IS NOT INTENDED TO DO Not to prevent people from getting drugs for legitimate medical purposes Not to decrease the number of prescriptions for pain management Not to target patients, prescribers, or pharmacies for investigation

Department of Health Professions Reporting Area 2002 General Assembly passed legislation establishing a pilot Prescription Monitoring Program in Planning Region III

Department of Health Professions Requests June requests as of 6/2/04 46 prescribers had utilized the program records in the database

Department of Health Professions Drug Diversion Unit and the PMP Data from the Drug Diversion Unit showed that illegal activity had moved outside the program area. Complaints received statewide by the unit increased 26% while decreasing in the program area by 47%.
