Tribal Open Dumps Background –Public Law , Indian Lands Open Dump Cleanup Act of 1994 –Enacted October 22, 1994 –Congressional concerns on solid waste open dump sites located on Indian lands

Tribal Open Dumps Background –Purposes of Act Locate open dumps on Indian lands Assess the relative health and environmental hazards Provide financial and technical assistance to close open dumps to comply with Federal and/or Tribal standards

Tribal Open Dumps Background –Indian Health Service (IHS) assigned to conduct inventory of all open dumps on Indian lands –Submit annual report to Congress –IHS to also identify level of funding needed to bring dumps into compliance and develop solid waste management plans
