I would like to speak about the rainforest and I hope you’ll find it interesting and you’ll enjoy it a lot. What is a rainforest? The rainforest is a tall, dense jungle. The reason it is called a "rain" forest is because it rains a lot. The climate of a rain forest is very hot and humid so the animals and plants that exist there must learn to adapt to this climate. The rainforests contain 30 million species of plants and animals, more than any other part of the world. There are 50 million tribal people living in the rainforests. What is the rainforest offers to us? - Wood - Ingredients for medicines - Foods like chocolate, pineapple, cinnamon, sugar… - Rubber - Oxygen: It is the lung of the planet that produces oxygen and cleans the atmosphere to help us breathe. … but the rainforests are being destroyed ! do you know that every hour disappears an area corresponding to ha, equivalent to football fields?. 3

3.Big hydro-electric dams: They build hydro-electric dams to generate energy. This damage the rainforest and often uproots thousands of people, destroying their land and culture. 4.Mining and Industry: They construct roads, mines and industries. For these reason indigenous people are displaced and the rainforest is damaged. Also water, air and land get polluted. 5.Tourism: The creation of national parks has helped to protect rainforests. But, as national parks are open to the public, tourism is damaging some of these areas. 5

 If we choose another materials, it won’t be necessary to cut down so many trees.  If they grow new trees and we, as consumers, buy environmental friendly wood, the rainforests will be more protected.  If they don’t cut down so many trees, the rainforest will produce lots of oxygen for the planet.  If the governments protect the tribal native people, they will not be displaced.  If they don’t build mines and industries in the rainforests, there won’t be water, air and land polluted.  If the tourists have a better environmental education, they’ll respect the rainforest. 6

If we don’t take action now, this vital part of our heritage will be lost forever. If we find better solutions, the Rainforests will always be the lung of life for the Earth. 7
