What Does the Future Hold for the Rio Grande? What can system dynamics (SD) modeling of the Rio Grande tell us about its future? Mr. Malczynski is a Sandia economist specializing in SD modeling of critical infrastructure and natural resources. He describes the creation of a complex model intended to illustrate possible future changes in the river system and the possible impacts of those changes on ecology, agriculture, urban environments, and economic systems. The model, created by a multi-agency partnership, will help stakeholders create a 50-year water plan for the Rio Grande. Leonard A. Malczynski is an economist and software engineer. He began his software engineering career with the advent of the first personal computers and has worked with a variety of platforms and operating systems. His specialties are in database management systems, system dynamics modeling, and geographic information systems. Over the past fourteen years he has concentrated on the building of system dynamics models of the nuclear fuel cycle, world energy consumption, water basin management, international conflict, and international migration. He was a member of the Office of the Chief Economist at Sandia National Laboratories from His current activities involve professional work in the System Dynamics Society, a software specialization in Powersim Studio, and development of software engineering techniques applicable to system dynamics modeling. Leonard has taught information systems and economics courses at the University of New Mexico and the College of Santa Fe since Prior to Sandia National Laboratories he spent 10 years as an independent information systems consultant in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean Invited Speaker: Mr. Leonard A.
