The Airman’s Creed and Code of Conduct

Overview Airman’s Creed Code of Conduct 1 1

The Airman’s Creed Introduction

THE AIRMAN’S CREED I AM AN AMERICAN AIRMAN. I AM A WARRIOR. I HAVE ANSWERED MY NATION’S CALL. MY MISSION IS TO FLY, FIGHT, AND WIN. I AM FAITHFUL TO A PROUD HERITAGE, A TRADITION OF HONOR, AND A LEGACY OF VALOR. I AM AN AMERICAN AIRMAN, GUARDIAN OF FREEDOM AND JUSTICE, MY NATION’S SWORD AND SHIELD, ITS SENTRY AND AVENGER. I DEFEND MY COUNTRY WITH MY LIFE. I AM AN AMERICAN AIRMAN: WINGMAN, LEADER, WARRIOR. I WILL NEVER LEAVE AN AIRMAN BEHIND, I WILL NEVER FALTER, AND I WILL NOT FAIL.

Airman’s Creed “As Airmen, we have a unique warfighting perspective… We are Airmen Warriors– dedicated to flying, fighting, and winning. … One of my top priorities has been to reinvigorate the warrior ethos in every Airman of our Total Force. To me, our warrior ethos is the warfighting-focused culture, conviction, character, ethic, mindset, spirit, and soul we foster in all Airmen.” — General Moseley, Former USAF Chief of Staff Trans: With that in mind, let’s look at our Airman’s Creed. As you’ll see, our Chief of Staff, General Moseley, has given a tremendous amount of thought to what it means to be an Airman today. Let’s talk about the Airman’s Creed and what it means to you. … Each of you should reflect on what you think it means to be an Airman today. 1 1

I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.

Discussion Code of Conduct ARTICLE VI I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

AF Core Values and The Code of Conduct

Summary Airman’s Creed Code of Conduct 1 1

Code of Conduct “While on a flight over North Vietnam, Capt. Sijan ejected from his disabled aircraft and successfully evaded capture for more than 6 weeks. During this time, he was seriously injured and suffered from shock and extreme weight loss due to lack of food. After being captured by North Vietnamese soldiers… he overpowered 1 of his guards and crawled into the jungle, only to be recaptured after several hours... During interrogation, he was severely tortured; however, he did not divulge any information to his captors... During his intermittent periods of consciousness until his death, he never complained of his physical condition and, on several occasions, spoke of future escape attempts. Capt. Sijan's extraordinary heroism and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty at the cost of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions…” —Medal of Honor Citation, Capt Lance P. Sijan
