AZTEC BATTLE SHIELDS Mr. Bowen 6th grade Social Studies

AZTEC SOCIETY  Warlike people  Conquered most of their neighbors  Forced subjects to pay tribute  POW’s were often sacrificed to the Gods

Location of the Aztecs  The Aztecs occupied present day Mexico  The numbers represent the former capitals of the Aztec empire.  3-Tenochitilan was the last capital and most important city in the Aztec Empire.

AZTEC WARRIORS Aztec warriors lived to fight for the Gods. It was more of an honor to capture an enemy than to kill one. Captured enemies were then used for human sacrifices to the Gods.

BATTLE SHIELDS Aztec Battle Shields were personalized by each warrior. The shield reflected the warrior’s personality and/or honored a particular God. Often, warriors used an animal motif for their shields.

SHIELD DESIGN Shields were designed to both intimidate and distract the enemy. Animal facial designs were often used. Vivid colors in both paint and feathers were employed to achieve the desired effect.
