WOW Week of Welcome, aka Warrior Orientation Week Aug 11th-13th Registration form available in your middle school counseling office or at WHS

OUT OF DISTRICT STUDENTS  If you live out-of-district: 1. Request a release from your home district. Your district of residence will forward the approved Interdistrict Transfer Agreement to CVUSD. 2. To expedite the process, send your application with all supporting documents to your district of residence AND to CVUSD at the same time as you apply for release from your home district. 3. Interdistrict transfer paperwork will be processed as it is received starting in mid February and takes two weeks to be processed. 4. ONCE ACCEPTED, you may request an enrollment packet from the WHS counseling office and register your student PLEASE NOTE: Enrollment paperwork can take up to one hour. Please arrive no later than 2:00 p.m. to enroll your student. Please call WHS Counseling to obtain an enrollment packet ext. 1019, 1020, 1021 or 1032

PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS  If your student is coming from a private school but lives within WHS boundaries:  Contact the WHS counseling office to enroll your student.  Must bring proof of residence to obtain enrollment packet.  Proof of residence = gas, electric, water, and/or trash bill from within the last 45 days. PLEASE NOTE: Enrollment paperwork can take up to one hour. Please arrive no later than 2:00 p.m. to enroll your student. Please call WHS Counseling to obtain an enrollment packet ext. 1019, 1020, 1021 or 1032

SCHOOL CHOICE STUDENTS  Must submit school choice paperwork by March 2nd to the district office.  Decision letters mailed back to families by end of March  Once approved, you may pick up a 9 th grade course request form from the WHS counseling office and submit by May 1 st to WHS

ACADEMIC PETITIONS Available at the middle schools and in the WHS counseling office. Due: May 1, 2015 NOTE: We may be piloting an online petition form for science courses. More info soon.

ACADEMIC PETITION CRITERIA  All students in CP must petition to move from CP to honors/AP level courses  Los Cerritos and Colina students should pick-up forms at the middle school; all others pick-up at WHS  Submit completed petition to middle school or WHS by May 1 st  Placement exams required in math and English  Geometry H: Wed., May 20th, 3:30 p.m. at WHS  Other H/AP math courses: Wed., August 19th, 8:00 a.m., at WHS  English: Will be taken in English 8 CP classes this spring  No placement exam for Biology Honors. Student must earn at least 2 A’s in 8 th grade science & should be going into Geometry CP or H in grade 9 NEW: All students currently in honors courses:  If you are currently in honors and earn B- or better, you may select honors on your registration form.  If you are earn a C, you must submit a petition to remain in honors in grade 9

COURSE REGISTRATION FORMS  Registration forms distributed to Redwood, Los Cerritos and Colina  Registration forms are due to the student’s Social Science teacher  Colina: Forms given on Fri., Feb 20 th – DUE: Mon. Feb. 23 rd  Redwood: Forms given on Thurs., Feb 26 th – DUE: Mon., March 2 nd  Los Cerritos: Forms given on Mon., March 2 – DUE: Wed., March 4th  Students from other CVUSD middle schools will need to submit a school choice application prior to obtaining a course registration form from the WHS counseling office.  Out of district/private school students will obtain a course registration form when enrolling the student.

Q PARENT CONNECT  The district grade reporting system is “Q”  Report cards are not mailed home but are available online on Q  Families coming from middle schools within the district will maintain the same Q accounts in high school  Students new to the district will receive a Q account after they register  The system takes 24 hours to update and generate a parent/student account  Parents may call/ the counseling office (Marilyn Maygren or Barbara Howe) at least 24 hours after they register to obtain their Q passwords

THERE ARE TWO BASIC SETS OF REQUIREMENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL: High School Graduation Requirements  Any level of the course will count  Must meet only the minimum requirements  Earn credits with D- or better 4-Year University Requirements, a.k.a. “A-G”  Must take CP level or higher  Must often take courses above and beyond minimum requirements  Must earn a C or better (must earn a B or better for selective colleges)

TYPICAL 9 TH GRADE SCHEDULE:  6 classes  Start/End times:  1 ST thru 6 th period: 7 a.m. – 1:47 p.m.  2 ND thru 7 th period: 8 a.m. – 2:48 p.m.  If you plan to take band, choir, or theater, students can opt to take health in summer school to avoid a 7 period day  Otherwise, if you take one of those classes in addition to an elective, you will be at school from 1 st thru 7 th period. ENGLISH REQUIREMENT High School Graduation  Four years of English College/University, a.k.a. “A-G” : Four years of college prep (CP) level or higher. Must pass with grade of “C” or better.

MATH REQUIREMENT High School Graduation Three years of mathematics (equivalent of 30 credits) One of the three years must meet or exceed Algebra 1. Note: Algebra 1 taken in grade 8 will not count towards the 3 year HS graduation requirement, therefore you must take 3 years above and beyond Algebra 1. A-G Reqt: Three years of CP level or higher. Must pass with a grade of “C” or better. REQUIRED  Algebra 1 CP / H  Geometry CP / H  Algebra 2 CP / H 4 th year RECOMMENDED AP Statistics AP Calculus Functions Stats and Trig CP Math Analysis CP / H Statistics CP Some students will complete Algebra in grade 8 and therefore must go above and beyond to meet his/her 30 credits

SOCIAL SCIENCE REQUIREMENT STARTS IN GRADE 10 High School Graduation Each of the following 1 year World History (or AP Euro) 1 year US History 1 semester U.S. Government & Politics 1 semester Economics A-G Requirement: Must pass the following with a “C” or better 1 YEAR  World History CP or AP European History 1 YEAR  US History CP or AP US History 1 SEMESTER  US Govt & Politics CP or AP US Govt & Politics 1 SEMESTER  Economics CP or AP Macroeconomics Well qualified students (“A” or “B” in English honors; “A” in CP) may enroll in AP Human Geography as an ELECTIVE in grade 9, space permitting. This is not a required course.

HEALTH IN SUMMER SCHOOL  Health is offered by the Conejo Schools Foundation for a fee   Why take health in summer?  This allows the schedule to accommodate a world language AND band, choir or theater without having a 7 period day.  Final grades due to the counseling office by August 10th

VISUAL & PERFORMING ART, WORLD LANGUAGE, & CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION High School Graduation 1 year, chosen from ONE of the following subject areas: Visual & Performing Art or World Language or Career Technical Education (CTE) course A-G Reqt: Must take BOTH a VPA and a World Language and pass with “C” or better: 1 year of a VPA and 2 years of the same World Language  3 years of language recommended

ELECTIVE REQUIREMENT High School Graduation Every class taken above and beyond the previously listed graduation requirements will count towards the 75 credit elective requirement A-G Reqt: Must pass with “C” or better. 1 full year of a CP/H/AP level elective is required (above and beyond previously mentioned requirements)

WHS CAREER MAJORS PROGRAM  A voluntary, self-paced and self-directed career exploration program for students in grades 9-12 who want to focus on college and career exploration in a particular area.  Benefits include: preparing for future employment, networking with professionals, gain valuable insight into career options  Requirements include: job shadowing, informational interviews, volunteer work hours, membership in campus a related campus club.  Career majors offered: Business, Engineering, Family/Consumer Science, Fine Art/Media Art, Health Science, Public and Human Service  Check out the “Career Education” tab at for more information and documentswww.conejousd.org/whs
