LEADERSHIP WHAT EVERY MANAGER NEEDS TO KNOW

CHAPTER 1 – The Better You Are at Management, the More Freedom You Have to Lead

MANAGEMENT + LEADERSHIP = SUCCESS To lead. To march at the head of the parade. To win the respect and admiration of followers and peers. To help others reach their personal goals. Do you have the right stuff? What are the leadership characteristics you respect most in a leader?

Leadership Characteristics I Respect From the following list of characteristics (traits or behaviors) write down on the sheet provided the five you respect most in a leader. Feel free to substitute some of your own. Patience Compassion Decisiveness Integrity Objectivity Positive Attitude High Energy Tact Goal Oriented Charisma Communication Skills Firmness Fairness Humor Openness Consistency Ambition Fearlessness

Where are the Leadership Opportunities? The answer is Everywhere! There are many more leadership opportunities than you suspect. If you think you are ready, there is probably one waiting for you now.

MANAGEMENT VERSUS LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT is concerned with achieving organizational objectives. Management means communicating, planning, organizing, controlling and evaluating. It means resolving conflicts. It means setting goals and moving employees toward them. Management is keeping people productive, maintaining optimal working conditions, and making the best possible use of all resources. Management is anticipating problems and solving them before productivity declines. MANAGERS Protect their operations Accept responsibility Minimize risks Accept speaking opportunities Set reasonable goals Pacify problem employees Strive for a comfortable working environment Use power cautiously Delegate cautiously View workers as employees LEADERS COMPARING MANAGERS WITH LEADERS Advance their operations Seek responsibility Take calculated risks Generate speaking opportunities Set “unreasonable” goals Challenge problem employees Strive for an exciting working environment Use power forcefully Delegate enthusiastically View workers as potential followers

MANAGEMENT SKILLS: A PREREQUISITE FOR LEADERSHIP Management training is the best foundation on which to build a successful leadership role. Management skills are not a substitute for leadership skills. It is the blend of the two that provides the winning combination. YOU CAN BE AN EXCELLENT MANAGER WITHOUT BECOMING A GOOD LEADER, BUT YOU CANNOT BE AN EXCELLENT LEADER WITHOUT BECOMING A GOOD MANAGER.

ARE YOU READY TO ACCEPT THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE? Making the transition from a management position requires commitment. Acquiring new leadership skills is not an overnight proposition – Leadership is a state of mind!
