"From values to future farming systems" Jǿrn Kjǽr Madsen “Big steps = big results”

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment by Jǿrn Kjǽr Madsen About me My strategy Type of entrepreneur, Company and environment Important factors for success of system My vision regarding the three farming systems developed Tips for colleagues

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment by Jǿrn Kjǽr Madsen Who is Jǿrn Kjǽr Madsen? Married, with 3 children Cooperative venture together with neighbours and starting entrepreneurs My company in a nutshell: Maximum growth Expansion from 30 to 450 cows My environment: Central Denmark

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment by Jǿrn Kjǽr Madsen Within the framework of the project ‘animal in balance’, I was involved in the development of Specialty Dairy. I find the concept of utility in particular very attractive.project ‘animal in balance’, Specialty Dairy Of the various systems developed, Specialty Dairy still greatly interests me, with the exception of a few specific aspects. In some respects, I also fit into the idea of a Community Dairy.Specialty DairyCommunity Dairy My own company strategy is as follows: Reducing cost price via growth Have already expanded from 30 to 450 cows Future growth towards 1000 or more cows Utilisation of technology in order to further improve the level of management

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment Entrepreneur: Focus on profit= return expressed primarily in monetary terms Striving for perfection Open attitude to forms of cooperation Location: Rural area in the country with lots of space for expansion Do not wish to work purely in an industrial fashion Cow Good care for the cows provides good results Good accommodations result in a good stock of cattle Environment Can not influence the milk price; one therefore needs to produce more effectively and cheaply Innovation through the use of technical resources

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment Present operational system: 450 cows at present Cows are indoors all year round Cooperation with a neighbour, milks the cows regularly, fieldwork. Cooperation with young couple in the vicinity, who take care of calves and dry off cows at separate location Sales channels through large established players: Arla for the milk and Danish Crown for meat. Expected developments: Further growth Further specialisation: cooperation with other dairy farmers, establishing a separate transition company for the calving period Interest in wind energy and biogas but no concrete plans as yet.

"From values to future farming systems"

Growth through investment : Vision regarding the 3 systems SPECIALTY DAIRYSPECIALTY DAIRY: The more we measure, the more we know Utilising all technical resources available to learn more about dairy farming Utilising technical resources to become a better farmer Turning a farm into a factory is not a good idea A farm where visitors are not welcome is not a good development Fits well into the present manner of farming Is for me a beautiful concept to implement

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment : Vision regarding the 3 systems NATURE’S DAIRYNATURE’S DAIRY: Nature’s dairy is a plan for dreamers No control of the situation Achieving a return from nature management is not a farmer’s primary concern It may be a good plan for other entrepreneurs, but not for me

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment : Vision regarding the 3 systems COMMUNITY DAIRYCOMMUNITY DAIRY: This concept describes my own company fairly well Dairy cattle remain on my own farm My neighbour does the work in the field A husband and wife, starting out as entrepreneurs, take care of the young stock and cows not giving milk Building a manure fermentation facility is a high priority Very feasible concept

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment The most important tip: “The best 50 dairy farmers in Denmark differ just as much from each other as do all other people. Your own personal vision/strategy is just as good as that of another, as long as you go for it for the full 100%.” Choose a farming system which you feel comfortable with; for example, growth is appropriate for me and a Nature’s Dairy is not.

"From values to future farming systems" Growth through investment Tips for colleagues who also want to expand: Taking bigger steps gets you there faster If you are good to your cattle, then your cattle will be good to you Do you have plans for the future? Then make them as big as your fantasy allows, and then do at least twice as much Strive for perfection
