Applying Lean to EHS

Key Points 5 Principles of Lean Application within EHS Real World Value Results

5 Principles of LeanHealth & Safety Application Value Specify what creates value from the customer’s perspective. Reducing the time it takes to have work completed safely and compliantly The Value Stream Identify all the steps along the process chain. Ensure workers are compliant, work is being carried out safely, the required PPE is used and that all the appropriate people have been notified and have granted approval FlowMake the value process flow. Define what order are all of the above steps completed, by whom and how many times? Pull Make only what is needed by the customer (short term response to the customer’s rate of demand). Identify which of the above steps must be done and what is the most effective time for that step to be completed Perfection Strive for perfection by continually attempting to produce exactly what the customer wants. Apply this knowledge to reduce the time it takes to get work completed safely and compliantly AND removing the risk of steps being skipped 5 Principles of Lean

Application within EHS

3 - 7 minutes preparing badge minutes wait for permit approval minutes preparing permit(s) 3 months preparing for annual audits and contactor reviews 15 minutes review and closing of permit 1 week wait for 2 hour induction 1 Week waiting for insurance details 55 MINUTES EACH CONTRACTOR VISIT Time Spent Before Lean

Badge Prepared in advance 3 – 8 minute permit review 5 minutes preparing permit with permit templates Instant reports and real time contractor reviews minutes Improved induction scheduling combined with multiple training options. Automated so responsibility is shifted back to vendor 15 MINUTES EACH CONTRACTOR VISIT Time Spent AFTER Lean

Adding value is the key to Lean Processes – in this case value also includes ensuring that all work is being carried out safely, compliantly and with the appropriate transparency. All appropriate people know exactly what work is going on right now, what is planned for the future and what was carried out in the past. They also know who is was responsible for this work. Quality is certain as all the appropriate Risk Assessments, Permits, JSA’s and approvals are completed. EHS are certain that everyone performing work has been informed of the right safety equipment, qualifications and insurance for the work they are carrying out. Continuous improvement processes are in place. It’s not just about cutting costs! Real World Value

Return on Investment Within Nine Months! Cost Know Exactly What is Going On. Right Now! Visibility & Control Be Certain that Everyone Across All your Sites is Safe and Compliant! Safety 40 Minutes of Time Saved for EACH CONTRACTOR VISIT 100 VISITS = $4,000 SAVED Results
