Literacy Our Literacy this half term will be a mixture of the ideas from the Language and Literacy Scheme and character study of Katie Morag from the delightful books by Mairi Hedderwick. For Language and Literacy we will be exploring the themes of communication and relationships using two engaging picture books. For non-fiction we will look at formal and informal language by exploring different forms of communication such as letters and s. As part of our cross-curricular topic we will read many of the Katie Morag stories and find out about what kind of character she was and analyse her adventures on the Island of Struay. We will continue with Big Writing each week as well as daily handwriting practice and weekly spellings and guided reading opportunities. Science We will link our Science this half term to our work on Katie Morag. We will be examining forces – pushing and pulling and investigating how to make things move on land and on water. RRS Article 28: You have the right to develop all your skills to the best of your abilities Computing Topic: We are zoologists Collecting data about bugs E-safety: The children will learn the importance of keeping personal information private; they achieve this by not including names or photographs of people. The pupils are taught to respect rules for using digital equipment when out of the classroom, to ensure the equipment is kept safe and that they are not so focused on using it that they become unaware of risks around them. They will then organise the data they have collected, record it using a graphing package, and interpret the graph to answer questions about the animals..

Geography Our topic for the half term is all about Katie Morag – An Island Home. Katie Morag lives on the Island of Struay. We will be finding out where this is and how it compares with where we live. We will be examining what it is like to live on an island and learning about human and physical features of an environment. We will find out about transport on the island and how it compares with transport in Burnham, and we will also compare and contrast the weather. We will develop our map reading skills and use both Primary and Secondary sources to find out about life for Katie Morag and her family and friends. Music This half term our Music will focus on exploring sounds; linked to our Geography topic. We will explore the timbre & texture of different pieces of music inspired by myths of Scotland, Northern Island and Wales. We will match descriptive sounds to images, produce our own sounds and evaluate our performances. RRS Article 31: You have the right to experience a wide range of cultural activities. Art/DT This half term we will be developing our painting skills. We will experiment with different types of paint; learning how to mix colours; looking at different styles of painting and famous artists; and trying out some landscape painting. PE/Games We will be developing our Gymnastics skills for indoor PE. For outdoor PE we will be working on Athletics skills. We will practise our running, throwing and jumping skills. We will continue trying to develop good sportsmanship skills and work habits for PE lessons such as changing quickly & following instructions straight away. RRS Article 24: You have the right to be healthy and to participate in lots of activities that help you stay healthy. PSHE/RRS In PSHE this half term we will look at Relationships. We will talk about feeling loved & cared for. We will discuss when people leave us, important people & things in our life & discuss feeling lonely & feeling included. We will use the Katie Morag stories to discuss feelings of jealousy & upset as well. RE This half term we will be learning about special places. We will learn about the Church, the Mosque, the Synagogue and the Gurdwara. We will learn about the significant features of each building and its relevance to the Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Sikh faiths respectively. We hope to visit one or more of these religious buildings to further our understanding more. PE days are Tuesday (outdoor) and Friday (indoor). Please make sure you have the correct kit, labeled and in school all week. Earrings must be removed for PE, and long hair tied back.
