People are generally good Difficult to express kindness towards others Provide service that makes intelligent suggestions for random acts of kindness Provide tools to help organize others Make it easy to find volunteer events that fit into a user’s schedule Problem and Solution

Previous Design Medium-fidelity prototype Originally designed for Apple products Created using JustInMind prototyper

Updated Design Switched to Android interface Fixed issues found by heuristic evaluation Created using JustInMind prototyper

Participants Procedure Test Measures Tasks Online Usability Test

22 participants completed tasks Recruited through social networks Most participants were students between 18 and 24 years of age No compensation Participants

Welcome screen and introduction Initial questions to find out about user Perform tasks Questionnaire after each task Final questionnaire at end Procedure

Demographics, smartphone proficiency, volunteer experience Task success or failure User perception and feedback Overall thoughts Click path Test Measures

Represents a common action a user would perform often Simple Task You're going about your day and feel like doing a random act of kindness. You want to find an activity you can do right away. Use the app to find a suggestion for a random act of kindness that appeals to you.

Still a main function of application Less common than simple task Moderate Task You had plans for an evening later this week that just fell through. You are free for a couple of hours after 5:00pm on March 14th, but need to stay in Seattle. Sign up for an event that's happening then.

Useful to much smaller group of users Involves more user input More difficult functionality Complex Task You’re organizing a walk for breast cancer for this Saturday, April 28th 2012, and you’re still searching for people to join. The event will be held at Seattle Center and is sponsored by QFC. It starts at 10:00 am and ends at 4:00pm.

Success rates of tasks were similar, regardless of difficulty/complexity User certainty of success did not correlate with task difficulty/complexity Some users felt there were too many screens they had to click through Results

Too many clicks required to complete tasks Reduced average completion times after first task is completed Confusing interactions due to wording Results (cont.) TaskAvg. Completion Time Simple Task1:58 Moderate Task0:54 Complex Task1:25

Change button labeling Improve date/time pickers Unify style/design Add button to My Events page to Search Suggested UI Changes

Improve requirements indicator Add volunteers specification Add event reminders Show comments of other users More UI Changes

Application has changed quite a bit Usability testing was successful Good suggestions for change Good position for next phase of project Wrap-up
