22/10/07Richard Salmon 10 minute micro-teach “An introduction to the key social and cultural issues which have impacted upon the media industries and media products” (followed by Q & A)

22/10/07Richard Salmon Approach The approach to this topic is generic with a only very brief focus upon; Media (Interactive & Film and Television) Music (Production & Technology) Art & Design (Culture and convergence) Performing arts (Dance, Drama, Music & TV) More detailed important information is contained in the printed notes supplied at the end of this presentation, please read them.

22/10/07Richard Salmon The Aim 1.is to impart an understanding and list of some of the key social and cultural issues that influence media products 2.and to provide notes on some of the social and cultural issues that have impacted media products in both ‘historical and contemporary’ times ~ thus providing an overview and starting point for further investigation and research.

22/10/07Richard Salmon To achieve the aim It is important to separate media product content from the medium in which it is being presented. For example ; The genre of the music, dance and drama presented in a short contemporary media production on a digital television channel may have social and cultural influences that span hundreds or even thousands of years of history ~ whereas the medium in which the content is being presented has only been in existence in very recent times

22/10/07Richard Salmon History Art, Design, Dance and Music have been around for a very long time indeed. The origins of Drama for entertainment purposes is less easy to place historically. The Ancient Egyptians Greeks Romans

22/10/07Richard Salmon History The rise of Christianity Medieval European Culture Renaissance Industrial Revolution The harnessing of electricity The reduction in size and cost of electronics and subsequent digital revolution

22/10/07Richard Salmon Key Social and Cultural issues History Demographics Wars Industry Travel & Communication Technological Development Governments and their directives Market forces ‘peoples wants and needs’

22/10/07Richard Salmon Observations Music Production & Technology, Art & Design, Performing Arts, Dance, Drama, Film & Television and more recently Interactive Multimedia are all deeply interrelated disciplines, market places, industries and subject areas History and ancient societies and cultures contribution and influence on modern culture and society, demographics, wars, industry, technological development, government decisions & directives, market forces ‘peoples wants and needs’ are similarly deeply interrelated and all have had social and cultural impact upon the media industries and products produced by them.

22/10/07Richard Salmon A Cultural Revolution The digital revolution has provided opportunities to mix and match cultural information in art in ways that were previously very difficult or impossible The cultural information that was largely preserved in our analogue media productions is now much more socially and culturally adaptable and transportable. This, in turn, is fuelling convergence in international society and culture in the arts. A cosmopolitan, multi-cultural and artistic society free from national prejudices, producing media products that are at home in any part of the world.

22/10/07Richard Salmon Conclusion To conclude; social and cultural issues which have impacted upon the media industries and media products is far to big a subject to sum up in ten minutes. To master this subject requires a great deal of investigation and research. However I hope the notes provided instil a greater insight as to the subjects breadth and depth and that this presentation provided a good introduction, thank you.

22/10/07Richard Salmon Outcomes Can you; 1. identify some of the key social and cultural issues which have impacted upon the media industries and media products 2. reference examples of historical events in a ‘local or international’ context which have impacted upon the media industries and media products
